I saw them at one of the free oldies concerts in front of Boston City Hall in the 80s. Paul was plastered and went on a rant about how he was so fat he hadn't seen his dick in years and some stuff about how they recorded Louie Louie before the Kingsmen but it didn't get released in time. Both of which are probably true.

The Pharaohs did it first I think. Revere did the cover before the kingsmen but their version was more popular because dude had braces and the song sounded like gibberish. Something like that.

If I remember right, his explanation was that because of the release schedule, even though it was in the can before the Kingsmen's it didn't actually reach any of the important markets until after theirs was already a hit.

He did not address the part where theirs is kind of better than his, even though it was the only really good thing they did.

It's interesting because, well, yeah. You're right. The Kingsmen's version is far superior but Paul Revere's sticks more to the reggae-ness of the original. Wanna hear something weird? My favorite popular version of the song is Iggy Pop's.

(Accidentally 5 starred my submission)

Prefer this to the reunited 80's Monkees cover as sung by Mickey Dolenz.
