Every time I see this fucking show, I'm always legitimately, no joke, convinced it's an Onion piece. Then I see someone like fucking Dan Savage, who would never think to poke fun at himself like that, and I have that feeling of dread, like, "Oh my God, this might be a real thing..." So I Google it and confirm that dread. The show is actually real.

This has happened at least three times now. My brain absolutely refuses to remember that this is a real thing.

oddeye - 2014-11-22

Yeah, but I bet your dick remembers from all these sexy shenanigans going on inside a hot stinky box.

You only keep "forgetting" so you can watch a couple episodes to convince yourself it's real.

jreid - 2014-11-22

Fucking what?! I honestly thought this was Onion as well. Holy shit.

Killer Joe - 2014-11-22

"Thanks for joining us, that's all the time we have on SCREWBALLZ!"

infinite zest - 2014-11-22

To be fair, Savage Love began in the Onion, so it comes full circle.

infinite zest - 2014-11-22

Whoops! It began in the Stranger, which was founded by the Onion's co-owner. And now you know the rest of the story.

As far as this show, I've heard about it for a while and it sounds interesting. As far as the fucking goes, that goes back to shows like STUDS or even The Dating Game. Assuming people didn't fuck on the dating game is like wondering how you were born.

Hooker - 2014-11-22

People were not fucking ON THE SHOW, though. This is throwing a couple in a box with the explicit instruction of having sex while a studio audience waits outside in anticipation of them re-emerging fully fucked. It is exponentially more lascivious and vulgar.

yogarfield - 2014-11-22

And the stranger ain't gonna bay the bills. Dan's got expensive tastes. I keep having people assure me the stranger used to be a standout weekly, but I don't buy it.

yogarfield - 2014-11-22

PAY! PAY!

infinite zest - 2014-11-22

If I remember correctly, The Stranger did begin as a more "legitimate" weekly, but when the Rocket shut down they sort of took on the task of filling the hole between things like the Seattle Times and.. I dunno they became more like The Onion when they could, while still covering the same thing. So to me it's the choice between watching Brian Williams or Jon Stewart: they'll report the same thing, but one's a lot funnier and free. And Dinosaur Comics at the end (do they still have those?)

infinite zest - 2014-11-22

@Hooker good point. I can still manage to get it up if I'm on a Tinder date, but I still like the thrill of meeting someone in person out of the blue more. In a box? With people knowing you're fucking in the box? I'd probably be in there trying to fuck for hours because I'm thinking "I'm fucking in a box while people outside of the box are watching me try to fuck in a box.." I mean, I just try to think about algebra.

Or to put it another way, The Stranger is the AV Club section of The Onion, with attempts at onion-like humor which, like its sister to the south, the Mercury, often fall flat on their faces but are sometimes still hilarious like this front page headline from 2009:

http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/the-different-kinds-of -people-that-there-are/Content?oid=1554515

I might have mentioned this before, but I was really good friends with Misako Takashima when I was living in Madison, and she did the original Hentai illustrations for Savage Love, which really captured the essence or what the reader was asking. And I know I mentioned this before, but Savage and I worked at the same video store. Savage has become a voice and advocate for a large population since then, but I like to think that there's a part of him that misses those early days, and like to think that he snickers at the very existence of this show, assuming it's still on the air.

Gmork - 2014-11-22

At least reality shows are being honest about their motivations now.

"This is the show for people who want to watch people talk about sex just after having had sex."

I give it far more credibility than Dating Naked.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-11-22

Oh yeah, this (literally) fucking show. Nothing makes sex more fun and exciting than analyzing it with strangers afterwards!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-11-22

I approve of this.

Actually, it's about ethics in British entertainment.

cognitivedissonance - 2014-11-22

Easily the ugliest gay couple I've ever seen, and I've seen many.

fluffy - 2014-11-22

Just seems like another take on Dr. Drew's TV show.

Bobonne - 2014-11-22

The first time I learned of this existence of this show, via Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe, I was honestly shocked. Because I'd heard British comedians lamenting the state of British television for years, but never seen anything truly and utterly lowbrow enough to match what's come out of America, even being a fan of Mr. Brooker's work in the last few years.

But no. A show about people having sex in a box on stage and then talking about it.

I could tell it wasn't fake footage produced by his show, because the lighting and acting involved was too...well, it ws obviously real. But my mind refused to process it for a few minutes, until it sunk in.

This was the sort of thing that inspired his Dark Mirror miniseries. This was a real thing that really happened.

It was then that I understood that all that talk about British culture being truly terrible, beyond having created X-Factor, was true. As a child of the Colonies, I felt a mix of amusement and sadness that's difficult to describe, not unlike how a real child would feel finding out that their grandfather was a drug-addicted dogfucker.

Amazing. Five stars, richly deserved.

Only barely tangentially related, but I just made this:

Old People - 2014-11-23

TL, DW. Do people really fuck inside that stupid box?
