It's got to be impossible to enjoy this movie, but it's equally impossible to not enjoy Aubrey Plaza. plus meets minus kaboom

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-12

I love this movie out of all proportion to whether or not it's actually "good". I've seen it probably three times now. I've always said that cat's are the funniest animals on earth because they seem to have such an innate sense of dignity, coupled with absolute zero sense of humor They're so SERIOUS! .I'm a sucker for a cat driving a car, not because it's cute, but because it's absurd.

This is like an episode of MST3K with the main character doing the riffling.

The great thing about this is that the part of me that loves Christmas, and the part of me that hates Christmas, can get together and watch this without bumming each other out. It's the cure for the common Christmas.

Potrod - 2014-12-12

So I guess you're into Toonces the Driving Cat then?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-12

Fuck yes! It's the oblivious look on the cat's face, like he's trying to not notice the ridiculous things they're making him do. The first time I saw Toonces, I was in college, and it was just a really lonely, depressing Saturday night, and I was binging on Ice Cream and chips, and I felt horrible, and Toonces came on and all of a sudden I was just laughing like some kind of lunatic.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-12

Hey John, have you ever thought about becoming a cat? Like how Boomer is a dog, maybe you could be a cat? Your name could be Felix the Cat or whatever, it'd be cool.

A generation finds its pet rock.

infinite zest - 2014-12-12

Pretty much. I can't help but smile whenever I see Grumpy Cat, but this is Tunces meets Look Who's Talking meets.. I don't know, every christmas movie. If I spend 90 minutes with this, I might feel as grumpy.. fuck it I'm totally watching this.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-12

I was actually considering watching this movie based on the strength of the trailer, but I dunno, this skit is really dampening my enthusiasm. It starts off with a lame celebrity name-dropping gag that goes on for way too long, segues into some tritely ironic metajoke about Aubrey's sarcastic monotone, and then stumbles head-first into a montage about a woman doing things like how a cat would do them. Sorry, but doesn't this run counter to the whole point of the Grumpy Cat movie? Grumpy Cat is about a *cat* doing cat things. If I enjoyed the skit's premise, of seeing a woman do cat things, then I'd be completely let down by the actual film. It's a pointless bait and switch.

And then, to top it all off, the skit ends with a ska song!

I dunno, JHMF. You're losing me here. Bring me back on board.

Hooker - 2014-12-12

The only thing I laughed at was Grumpy Cat's reaction at 1:06. Plaza's awfulness is a good setup for Grumpy Cat's punchline.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-12

My friend watched this movie with me, and afterward, since she didn't know who Aubrey Plaza was, we watched Parks and Recreation on Hulu Plus, and that led to a binge of P and R watching that is still progress.

Here's the deal. Much to my surprise, Aubrey Plaza turned out to be an amazing actress. With April Ludgate, she manages to play an unexpressive character expressively, using her eyes, face, and especially her posture to say what April won't say. I don't know if she'll be able to build a long-term career on this deadpan persona, but she manages to be quite funny as a guest on "Conan" Apparently, based on youtube, she's on quite frequently.

A simple favor rocked

Hooker - 2014-12-12

Grumpy Cat was a special guest on a recent episode of WWE RAW. The lead commentator, Michael Cole, who forms the holy trinity of bullshit in the WWE with John Cena and Vince MacMahon, turned to the camera and said, in all sincerity and with no indication that he knew any better, "and who could forget our special guest tonight, Grumpy the Cat!"

infinite zest - 2014-12-12

I wonder what grumpy cat's finishing move would be

fluffy - 2014-12-12

A claw to the face, then pooping on the wound.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-13

The Mandible Stinkface.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-12

I'm not going to do that, homer. The Grumpy Cat movie is nothing if not Meta. At one point, Grumpy cat refers to the million dollar dog that the bad guys are trying to steal as "a McGuffin". The joke is that this is a very standard, dumb Hallmark channel Christmas movie, and Grumpy Cat keeps complaining about it, even live-tweeting "This movie is terrible." If you don't like this, there's no reason for me to expect that you'll like the movie.

Instead, I think you should watch "Want", the episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent where Neil Patrick Harris plays a cannibal serial killer. The character was inspired by Jeffrey Dahmer.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-12

This movie got bad reviews from the critics, good reviews from Amazon. One critic said that it was a bad movie that he enjoyed. For some it's a guilty pleasure.

I like this movie a lot, and I make no apologies or excuses for that, but this is not meant to imply that I believe anyone else would like it. If you like cats, like Aubrey Plaza, like Mystery Science Theater, and sort of resent some aspects of Christmas, it might be worth a try.

crasspm - 2014-12-12

All the stars are for Aubrey.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-12

Grumpy cat's hilarious frown is caused by a congenital defect, a kind of dwarfism. My fear is that there's someone out there performing performing unholy experiments, trying to create a genetically engineered meme-cat,

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2014-12-12

That cat is going to die from a heart attack.

Mother_Puncher - 2014-12-12

Internet memes.

apiaryist - 2014-12-12

Aubrey Plaza has facial paralysis(mostly belle's palsy), and joins such luminaries as Sylvester Stallone(forceps at birth) and Katie Holmes(a random viruse). She's overcome it and that's why she looks and talks like that.

Bort - 2014-12-13

Are you sure about the Bell's Palsy? I'm not seeing anywhere that says Aubrey is/was afflicted. And if she had it, we would expect her face (or half of it) to barely move, not for her to express boredom and cynicism so well.

That guy - 2014-12-13

Are we talking about the other thing, or is that off limits?
