Well, whatever vague opinion I had of you before just went straight to shit.

I lived in a college town similar to Berkeley and although the riots weren't for any particular police crime like these (first year it was just beating and gassing a bunch of drunk college students on Halloween,) it was the same situation as far as where to go, since the protests in subsequent years all took place on the main drag and they barricaded the side streets. This was before anyone had cameras on their phones so there's not much footage, but I turned out going up on the roof of the place I was working in. As soon as they took the horses off the streets I knew something was going to happen. To make matters worse, a good half of the people there were protesting police brutality, and the other half just came up from wherever to have a good time. I'm not saying it's the same here, but some of these people probably don't know the full ramifications of the court decision any better than you or I do and a "fuck all cops" mentality just goes into effect. It's deja vu all over again. There's nowhere to go and the police are having fun the way kids like to burn ants with magnifying glasses.

Strangely enough, there aren't many riots at Yale, and the students there are almost never roughed up by the cops. I have no idea why this is the case, but it happens to be so.

In Madison the first year it was just a shit show. After a good dozen years of "peaceful" drunken belligerence (which included setting fire to things and dozens of arrests) police just sort of lost it and seemingly beat up anybody they could with a costume. Professor, student, or just some regular Joe, it didn't matter. So there was good reason for the protests the following year, but a lot of people just wanted to be part of a riot and shit escalated pretty quickly. I know that street in Berkeley pretty well, and it's surrounded by residential and student housing, unlike the protests that have been going on in other cities (in Portland they just shut down the bridges.) You're not going to make much of a point by protesting outside of a sorority house or on campus, and it seems like the cops knew that, basically trapping the protesters. And that's how riots begin.

Yale's a different story; when I was out there in 2000 for my brother's graduation I turned my seat around when George W Bush gave the commencement speech, and turned it back around when Hilary Clinton gave hers. Why Yale gets multiple commencement speakers I'll have no idea. I had Bradley Whitford, AKA the bad guy from Billy Madison at mine. At first my parents were like "hey don't do that" but then others did it too and it sort of became a problem. I didn't care, I wasn't a student so why should I give a fuck? Anyway nothing happened but that's the same sort of "sit-in" mentality protesters in Madison had back in the 60s with the Dow Chemical riots. I think if our football team in the early 2000s was as bad as Yale's is always, none of the above shit show would've happened.

What's funny though (and I forgot about this until just now) is that all the peaceful protests in Madison were made violent by a couple of Yalies who went to Madison Wisconsin and suggested that students burn their draft cards and fuck up the system, things like that, back in '65 or so, spawning radical groups such as The Weathermen.
