Woah. Here's my best picture predictions from a GotG thread about a month ago. I was way off.

"Interstellar, Birdman, Wild, Guardians of the Galaxy, Inherent Vice, Theory of Everything.. probably a few others."

Grand Budapest Hotel was pretty to look at, but it was pretty much Darjeeling Limited but in a hotel instead of on a train. I actually liked Moonrise Kingdom more, which isn't saying very much.

And Boyhood, don't get me started. People praise it for being such an undertaking, but think about it: Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke weren't necessarily doing a ton during those 12 years, and even if they were attached to a film, it's easy to scoot away and film 10-minute sequences once or twice a year. The idea ostensibly comes from the 7-Up documentaries, which are in fact a huge undertaking, because those people are not actors and have to be tracked down.

I haven't even heard of Selma or Whiplash, and although I think Alan Turing is cool, Stephenson's novel Cryptonomicon seems like a much more realistic approach to the James Cameron-esque vibe I got from the Imitation Games trailer. Stephen Hawking's awesome too, but I have no interest in the movie.

So the one movie I actually liked is Birdman, which won't win. Boyhood will win and fuck the Oscars.

Dick poop.

"more realistic approach VS. the James Cameron-esque vibe.."

eh.. just watched the trailer for Whiplash; that's nothing compared to my musical childhood.

I'd like to know how Selma got best picture nomination and no actor/director/writing nominations.

Either all the old white people picking films thought the black people in the good movie didn't deserve anything, or a not so good black people movie needed a nomination just so that the whitest nominations tally in years could say "see? we have black people!"

infinite zest - 2015-01-15

Yeah, I watched a trailer for Selma and it looks really good. But literally, I hadn't heard a peep about it until today. But you know that's the Academy's thinking:

Guy with Cuban Cigar: "Well, we gave it to 12 Years A Slave last year, can we do that two years in a row?"

Intern with coffee cup in hand: "Umm.. sir, they're not the same movie.."

Cuban Cigar Guy: "You're fired! Nominate the black people movie and let's get this over with."

I do always have a problem with famous historical martyrs being portrayed by actors though, regardless of color or creed, especially in the starring role.

shut the fuck up solro, jesus christ

The oscars are stupid all the time. Don't give me your black kirkegaard schtick

SolRo - 2015-01-16

That guy, I know you're pretty retarded, but would you care to explain how a movie get a best picture nomination with only a best music nomination to go with it? I could understand if it was a musical, but Selma isn't a musical.

So....the actors/actresses weren't the best, the writing wasn't the best, the costumes weren't the best, the directing wasn't the best, the effects weren't the best...why does it have best picture nomination?

That guy - 2015-01-16

The nominations and winners have been stupid as fuck forever. It's a popularity contest. If academy voters vote for something, it gets votes. Ask them. They're probably too busy stroking off with Wes Anderson, but you could try.

Go back in time and ask how the movie that beat out Citizen Kane and Maltese Falcon for best picture got more votes than those two. That shit was racist, too.

Going full-on "that guy" here, but I would like to know why anyone gives a shit about the Oscars.

infinite zest - 2015-01-16

Having worked at indie theatres off-and-on for most of my adult life, I already pretty much know that my favorites will not be nominated. But once Oscar season came around, we got all of those, so if nothing else it was something to talk/bitch about ("why didn't anyone see this movie before it was nominated") It's kinda like giving a shit about the Grammys, which, knowing most of your music tastes, is giving a shit about nothing, but besides Avatar, I really can't think of a film since Crash that was nominated/won that I watched and didn't like. Can't say that about whatever's up for the Grammys, but I guess if I found out that The National were up against the Foo Fighters for rock album of the year or something, I'd be rootin' for The National..

So I guess we don't give a fuck even though we kinda do.

StanleyPain - 2015-01-15

At least good ol' fashioned USA #1 porno like American Sniper got nominated.

Kinda disappointed Eastwood, after years of making films with a bit more nuance and complexity, decided to go down the route of making a patriot gun-wank movie about a psycho murderer who bragged about supposedly murdering black civilians and never being caught, but we're supposed to feel bad for because "aww...murdering the brown peoples takes you away from the comforts of home."

SolRo - 2015-01-16

Did you miss his performance at an RNC convention?
