At this point I'm enough a jaded cynic that I saw this coming as soon as they gave concrete details about the game.

infinite zest - 2015-02-23

Heh.. a friend of mine in high school figured out a similar strategy to level up all day long in Ultima Online while he was at school or sleeping.. can't remember what it was (definitely not Rube Goldberg creative like this) but he was able to sell the avatars for hundreds of dollars a piece on ebay.

SolRo - 2015-02-23

a macro script program, it's incredibly easy to simulate mouse/keyboard inputs on a computer and put them on infinite loop

infinite zest - 2015-02-23

Yeah, but I think UO was one of the first games to disable macros for that very reason. Then again, dude's like teaching at Carnegie Melon or something now.

Nominal - 2015-02-24

Yeah pretty much every asteroid miner on EVE Online is a script.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-02-24

Eventually they cracked down on unattended macroing and game masters would throw your avatar in jail for like a week if you got caught. Of course there were other avatars in jail with you so you could simulate prison rape if you so desired.

Monkey Napoleon - 2015-02-25

Their crackdowns didn't really ever accomplish very much in the way of halting unattended macros.

The way the whole game was designed kind of encouraged it. They gave you five character slots per server per account, and any halfway decent player had at least one (if not more) accounts full of different characters on their server. In a game like WoW all you really need is one alliance and one horde and aside from a handful of class specific quests, you'll have access to 95%+ of the content in the game. In UO, a specific type of character severely limited what content or even other types of characters you had realistic access to.

StanleyPain - 2015-02-23

I can't believe the temple of crota thing still works. That's fucking pathetic.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2015-02-23

Ever since the FPS renaissance of 2000 (Deus Ex, Perfect Dark, Serious Sam), I have fantasized about the an MMORPG-FPS.

OVER A DECADE LATER IT HAS ARRIVED.

It is flawed, repetitive, and incomplete, but by God it exists! That everyone is tripping over themselves to point out the flaws proves how much people care about the final product, and the fact that it has broken sales records gives me hope for improvements in the genre down the line.

SolRo - 2015-02-23

the MMOFPS came out in early 2000s, it's called Planetside.

StanleyPain - 2015-02-23

Defiance predated Destiny by about 2 years and was (emphasis on *was*) a better game on all levels. Vanilla Defiance before any patches or DLC had more content then Destiny has at present.

Gmork - 2015-02-24

Defiance is utter fucking garbage, destiny is simply mediocre content in an otherwise good engine. Don't even fucking begin to defend defiance's worthless hunk of shit. At each game's core the engine to defiance is closer to a ps2 game and at destiny's cold, lifeless core is actually a legitimately complex and graphically/physically superior engine.

It's just being used in the most asinine way possible.

SolRo - 2015-02-24

gmork likes the pretty pictures.

zerobackup - 2015-02-24

Defiance was actually fun for what it was though, Destiny is 70% of a game glued together and that missing 30% is the fun part.

Retardo Montebaun - 2015-02-24

the only problem I have with Destiny is that before I play anything I always watch a let's play of it, and goddammit did each and every let's play of this game make it look balls out boring. I wanted to like it, I really did, but just watching it was such a chore that there was no way I could play it.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-02-24

I was listening to a podcast about this game, and apparently there are challenges that are impossible because parts of the game don't allow for what they require (like kill X things while riding X vehicle, but you can't do that yet) and they haven't even put in the ability to trade or sell items yet. Not to mention all the game lore is on websites and not in-game.

Kabbage - 2015-02-24

The Rock Paper Shotgun guy swears Planetside 2 is kind of a masterpiece.

SolRo - 2015-02-24

Destiny didn't (still doesn't?) have any kind of text chat.

This is going to be like the apple of online shooters, fanboys will be jerking it hard every time some basic feature is added that has otherwise been a staple of the genre for over 15 years

Monkey Napoleon - 2015-02-25

I dunno if I'd call Planetside 2 a masterpiece, but I definitely had more fun playing it than I've had gaming in years. Possibly since the first one.

In 5 years, gaming "critics" are going to give credit to Bungie for inventing ANOTHER genre it didn't actually invent, aren't they? Yeah, they probably will.

Maggot Brain - 2015-02-23

Oh, come on, that was cute.

fluffy - 2015-02-23

Saw it coming, but still expected it.

Someone did something similar to finish the ridiculously-long rose level in Katamari 2 as well. I think they just pressed up on one stick and attached the other stick to one of those auto-rotating fans.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-02-24

When I was 8 or so I put a soccer trophy to hold down the button for a shit ton of lives in Rush N' Attack on the NES.

Nominal - 2015-02-24

Putting a billiards ball on the attack button in one of the Ys games. There was a spot you could stand where you were safe and an enemy would wander into twice a minute. Left it for an afternoon for massive xp.

roofle - 2015-02-24

I remember doing this sort of thing for Morrowind eons ago. They want me to legit max Sneak or Acrobatics by actually playing the game? Fuck that noise.

garcet71283 - 2015-02-24

Did the same thing for athletics and sneak.

Then you realize you can just use the editor so you start that way and feel bad about the whole experience.
