I'd also like to point out that, in business textbooks, whenever they want to point to an example of liability fails when it comes to employee insensitivity they seem to always have an airline to point to.

My favorite firsthand accounts I've heard are:

-Someone not attaching the trailer to one of those luggage trucks right so it came off, rolled a few thousand yards across the runway, and slammed in to the engine of a plane waiting at the gate. Everyone pretended they didn't see anything and the plane took off later that day without any sort of inspection or anything

-The common practice (at least on Delta) of disregarding people's requests for regular vs. decaf coffee and just giving everyone in the plane regular or deaf depending on whether you want them to calm down or not.

-Any flight attendant can kick off any passenger for any reason. They have the final authority. The attendant I know has stopped takeoff and kicked people off for swearing at him before.

I'm not defending the guy or anything, but I heard a similar conversation last time I flew, on Midwest which is basically the same as Southwest I believe. At least then one of the radio stations was the just the transmissions and once in a while they'd get pretty raunchy, like a trucker on a CB. Although in all actuality the people responsible for his suspension probably don't care either, they just have to, from their perspective, do something to make it appear they care to save face for the company.

It's basically the same situation with the Duck Dynasty redneck and A&E. Their initial response was to kick the guy off their network due to his comments about gays and blacks, but then when they saw the backlash from rednecks who agree with him and support the show was bigger than the people who were annoyed by his comments, they immediately did a 180 and rehired him.

At the end of the day these huge companies are entirely amoral; they're in the interest of what's going to keep the bottom line numbers the highest, and if that means pretending to be for A or against B that's what they're going to do.

TV's a little different though. Like, I lost a lot of respect for Jonah Hill when he got angry at a Paparazzo and called him a "faggot." He immediately apologized and I guess now everything's cool, and he seems like a genuinely cool guy but I'll forever associate his homophobic outburst with the face. If you've ever worked as a line cook the R word and the F word come out a bunch, which are pretty much the only two pejoratives that I hate hate hate. But if the food's good I'll still eat it I guess because I don't have to meet the person who cooked my food just like I don't have to meet the pilot (pretty sure they don't let you do that anymore anyway) and find out that my food or flight was cooked or flown by a faceless asshole the way I'd have to look at the Duck Dynasty guy if I watched it..
