BHWW  - 2015-03-30
Do You Remember Love? went into development shortly after production on the original TV series ended, directed by Noburo Ishiguro, who'd worked on the original Macross as well as Space Battleship Yamato and Shoji Kawamori.
The film had quite a budget facilitated by the success of the show, and while it's far from perfect, subject to not only the pitfalls common to films that are rehashes of an anime TV series, and Kawamori was pretty inexperienced as a director then, for my money it remains as one of the better looking animated films ever produced.
Though, unlike certain modern rehashes which feature shot-for-shot recreations of scenes, or the clip-show movies which had already been pioneered by the likes of Gundam and Yamato franchises back in the 80s the crew not only the changed the designs and style of the series, but made alterations to the Macross narrative too. It still has the problem that afflicts a lot of film adaptions of anime TV series, trying to mash the storyline of a full-length TV series into the runtime of a feature film. Frankly, the middle part of the film drags in places where it needed to pick up the pace. A few too many scenes of closeups of characters faces. It's a flawed film that fails to stand on its own apart from the Macross franchise.
Despite all those problems it's still one of the best-looking animated films of the 1980s - the detail put into each cel is still amazing to me. For a "Film of the Series" there was a lot of ambition, hard work, and dare I say artistic passion put into DYRL, and at levels you rarely seen in the anime field since then. I just re-watched it not too long ago and I�m still blown away by the quality of the animation; I mean to think that this was all hand-drawn, hand-painted cels still amazes me.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2015-04-01 Whatever they do, they're going to make it look and act as much as Macross as legally possible. Look what happened with The Shadow Chronicles, which was basically Mospeada aesthetics shoehorned into Macross.
I'd love to see the underrated Southern Cross arc get its due. Played like a mess in anime form but lots of pretty compelling ideas under the surface.

I always preferred this version over the TV show's dopey knife knight, wherein Mirya loses and becomes Max's obedient alien wife because YOU KEEP WHAT YOU KILL or something.
One thing that surprised me about the film is how much more sympathetic Minmay is. Rick/Hikaru and Lisa/Misa have barely any chemistry, so it's weird when Rick dumps Minmay for a much more boring woman.
And this doesn't feel right without the awful "Clash of the Bio-Noids" dubbed version I grew up watching.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2015-04-01 What shocked me when watching the original subtitled version was how all the Zentraedi dialogue wasn't actually in Japanese. I'm an absolute sucker especially for when Japanese sci-fi brings out the conlangs as they seem much rarer on that side of the world.
As far as Lisa/Rick goes, I was rooting for them for most of the show just because Minmay was so damn irritating in the TV. Lisa didn't come off as frigid so much as professional and between that and Minmay having this whole weird thing with her cousin/manager, I learned that idols are the path to destruction.
