For context this is a real thing apparently in california called the Consensual Sex Law. Not sure how they enforce it, but basically it's taking "no means no" to its logical conclusion. So at any point during a sexual assault allegation it can be proven without a reasonable doubt that the assaulter did not ask permission, they're basically fucked. It's to reduce sexual assault mainly on college campuses I think, which are usually more highly monitored than off-campus or other regular living situations. Even when I lived in the dorms for half a semester, you had to check in your "guest" at the front desk, which kind of removes any spontaneous unspoken consent the way that buying condoms with your partner does. Maybe you Californians know more about this than I do: it's good on paper, but I don't really see it having that much effect, especially with PSAs like this one.

It doesn't even have to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt according to the law. Most assault allegations are handled internally by the school, and the accused is usually fucked no matter what. In those cases the school will heavily push for punitive action against the accused even in the absence of any evidence whatsoever. Probation, heavily pressured to move out to a difference dorm area, or plea bargaining to take sensitivity courses.

I knew one crazy student (textbook bipolar, couldn't keep any friends longer than a semester) who accused three different people of sexual assault over three semesters. Even up to the third time it happened, the school pushed for punishment against the accused simply because they were terrified of negative publicity for being "soft on rape".

Future trend: all college students issued body cams like cops?

Yeah, those slaps on the wrist are horrible and all, but somehow the colleges where rape victims have to leave school or otherwise are stuck on the same campus as their rapist seem a bit worse.

Maybe this was meant to be super metaphorical and I'm just missing something, but what makes it unsettling is how it seems to not acknowledge how consent for sexual encounters is non-verbal and implied 99% of the time, which technically becomes rape under the kind of thinking presented here.

I mean it obviously depends on the partner's level of communication and comfort. Obviously not everyone has sex like in the video, but it never hurts to ask for a clear go-ahead. I think you're overthinking this a little.

This almost reminds me of the Republican take on drugs. Is drug addiction a problem that should be addressed? Yes. Are satanists and drug dealers pushing crack on every grade school corner while hiding heroine syringes in Halloween candy, forcing us to adopt dishonest scare tactics and turn everyone into a criminal? No.

You can avoid raping someone without exhaustive due diligence. I wonder if they even asked ethnic actors if they wanted to appear in this or if they realized there's no way any of them would say yes.

For long-term couples, yes the consent is likely implied 99% of the time. I think this video is a reaction to the recent shit going down with casual encounters, and the fact that most rapists don't think they ARE raping. "Yeah, no means no. But she wasn't saying no when she passed out drunk!"

I think it's always good to ask. There's this girl that I see every once in a while, and we're both in pretty much fuckbuddy mode, but it's never planned, we just see each other at the bar and usually have sex after we bitch about how our shitty tinder dates went. But there've been a couple of times where I say no or she says no, and that's cool and we listen to music or smoke weed instead. And it's been like this for about 4 years now.
