Patton Oswalt's "Physics for Poets" experience:

Still frustrated that trig is taught so poorly. Sine and cosine are really pretty easy; every toddler understands them, they just don't use the terminology.

If you have a diagonal line, it goes vertically a certain distance, and horizontally a certain distance, right? Do you get a sense that the vertical / horizontal distances have some relation to the angle, like there's some sort of vertical / horizontal percentages that apply for a given angle? Well that's sines and cosines respectively.

Yeah.. when I was in college I had to fulfill my "Q" requirement, even though I took Calculus in high school. It was because I missed a test when, I don't know, I was moving halfway across the country for the first time and maybe had a lot on my mind?!? Anyway, I had to take Remedial Math and "Physics for the Arts," which were easy As, but they treated people majoring in philosophy, music or comparative literature (like me) as if they didn't know ANYTHING, like we didn't have to get a certain GPA or SAT/ACT score to get into University of Wisconsin Madison in the first place. Maybe we got high and forgot about it while writing our novels!? The remedial class lectures I never went to, but I guess the professor was kind of funny. And the physics one was nice because it was warmer than my house, and the chairs were comfy so I just slept. Yay for higher learning!

Don't blame the baby classes; it was probably up to you to select classes that would challenge you properly.

Unless the university said that the only classes you were allowed to take were the baby classes, in which case I guess it's the university's fault. But at least in my day, you could test out of classes if you could demonstrate proficiency, it wasn't a huge bureaucratic nightmare to find someone to sign off on it.

Heh.. I didn't care. If I had taken the test the week before classes I probably would've passed out, since Calculus was still pretty fresh in my mind, but credits are credits and I didn't really want a career in science or math. UW's a big school so I asked and it was like I could take the test next semester, or just suck it up and get it over with.
