Anyone with knowledge know if it was common to fly wide-body aircraft for such short flights at that time? A quick search shows the distance at 212 miles point to point.
The entire flight was actually between Istanbul and London, with a stopover at Paris. At 1,500 miles it would be considered a "medium haul" flight, which the DC-10 was built for.

Mayday/Air Crash Investigations is an awesome show. I discovered the show while on a Toronto-BC flight; Air Canada had made the kinda surprising choice to air it on their in-fight TV system.
