Oh they're a caliphate now? Are you part of the virtual jihad or something?
Daesh is a lot of things, but a "state" they are not.
While the balls on vice are huge and I love their ethics, usually, this looks to be a puff piece that further mystifies the advance of Daesh as something uncanny and inexplicable which 1.) isn't the case 2.) is basically PR for a destabilized group of untrained opportunists controlled by a small group of thuggy idealogues who are all trying to out evil each other.
The line this story toes is gross as fuck and not at all the case.
All Daesh did was carve up the levant along the sectarian faultulines that already existed, and then fizzled out, just like Gary Brecher predicted.
Saying anything else is just being part of their PR strategy.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2015-04-10 "just carving up the levant along the sectarian faultlines that already existed" is a pretty insane achievement, really. Iran already controls lebanon, and sunni in the region are fractured by Assad's maneuvering... The point i think is being missed in all (including this) media about the islamic state is that they are predominantly Saudi. If you don't know why this is a big deal, think about our biggest allies in the region. This is why our recent detente with Iran, which was so mystifying to so many, is such a big deal- we're trying to run interference on a rise of Sunni extremism. Those m-16s and american cammies aren't in the IS arsenal by accident OR as spoils of war from iraq- they were funneled through the kingdom of Saud.
The game we're playing in the middle east has become a deranged juggling act- we played nice with the saudis in order to offset oil expenditures and have a nominal "friend" in the region (besides jordan, which is going quietly through massive changes more or less unsung), but that pissed off shia islam the world over to such a degree that they began building a true hegemony in the region- vis. Lebanon beating Israel back (with the help of Iran's revolutionary guard, and the ONLY time israel has ceded control of territory under force of arms) then eastern iraq (taken over wholesale by Shia elements controlled by Iran before AND after the US invasion) and now yemen (previously a hotbed for sunni militancy but now embroiled in a civil war between houthi, shia and sunni)...
i could go on. our foreign policy is so hilariously short-sighted that before this is done we will have laid waste to any possibility of secular peace there could have been.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-04-10 Hell, the reason they have American weapons is because the US government spent 26 billion dollars to arm and train them. All the major news organizations reported on this fact. It is no secret. But otherwise, yeah, our good friends the Saudi's are by and large responsible for wahhabi extremism throughout the region, and the IS in particular.

What's eerie and striking about this are the interviews. Its like North Korea. Everybody sounds like they're reading from some kind of script.

Aress - 2015-04-09 It's almost as though none of them are thinking for themselves.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-04-10 Well they can't afford the expensive teleprompters we have, so a paper script is it.
