Meh. As I seem to feel the need to keep saying today, I'm almost 60... and I've known what a meme is for over five years, and movie stars and the POTUS are posting selfies now. This isn't an obvious attempt at being trendy, it's pretty much the world you live in, if you live on the internet, and I'm presuming that this is an ad for the internet.

Do ya feel me, Homey? Word.
Hooker - 2015-04-24
Hahaha, since 2010 you say?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-24
Since 2009, actually.

Nice fake laugh, dipshit.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-24
I knew what a meme was as far back as the 1989 edition of The Selfish Gene. Oh snap, and what, son?

Of course, the meme meme was a different meme back then, the modern meme meme having memetically evolved into a meme of quite different meaning than it had before. The Memer in this meme commercial memes the word "word" in a much different manner from the metetic meaning of the word "meme" which *I* would accept! His memeing of the word "meme" as a mirthful macro appearing magically in meatspace is, culturally speaking, no more nor less valid than my own meme of "meme", taken as it were from The Selfish Gene. But despite all that, I still say the term "meme" is misused in the Memer's meme meme.

You know what I mean?

EvilHomer - 2015-04-24
- word "meme". Not sure why my Android autocorrected that to "word"; probably had a meme overload.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-24
OH NO YOU DIDN'T!

Yeah, I'm toward the end of the curve, that's sort of the point.

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-24
"I'm almost 60... and I've known what a meme is for over five years"

Sounds like a meme.

We need to start a betting pool for which one of us is going to spontaneously combust in a fit of rage.

Waugh doesn't count, I'm pretty sure that already happened. :(

spikestoyiu - 2015-04-24
It seems weird to me that people remember the exact year they heard the word "meme".

EvilHomer - 2015-04-24
Well, technically it was 1996 for me; I read that edition the summer after sixth grade, and I remember it well, because I thought all the science-knowledge I was getting from Mr Dawkins would be sure to impress the girls in my class that coming school year.

My hypothesis was incorrect.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-24
I think it's like a Kennedy thing; the first time you hear the word "meme" is very important, because it changes your life, for better or worse.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-24
I'd really hate to be that one little kid right now, whose first encounter with the word "meme" was from this commercial.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-24
Not the year I first heard the word, the year that I learned what it meant. It was when I discovered and submitted the Boxxy Episode of Know your Meme, and the huge negative reaction it got (after being voted up in about 90 minutes) fascinated me. It was the beginning of my introduction to feminist politics on the internet. And the power of ADORABLE.

I'm not going to link to it now because cutting and pasting with the phone is an ordeal..Look it up if you want, I used another name, don't remember what it was.

That guy is really pushing Xenocide for poeTV MVP.

That guy - 2015-04-25
I've made way more enemies than Xenocide has.

StanleyPain - 2015-04-24
Personally, I kind of hate the misappropriation of the term "selfie." The term originally used to apply to people who just took vanity pictures of themselves (and only themselves) for the purposes of trolling for compliments and shit like that. Taking a picture of yourself because you are standing at a historical monument or recording a moment that you are with friends and family or something is not quite the same thing.
John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-24
The term has evolved. Deal.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-24
I keep hearing "ghost pepper sauce". That can't be right.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-24
Like the meme meme, the selfie meme has undergone memetic evolution. This is true. However, as SP points out, the selfie meme's shift has severely limited its instructive potential; while the contemporary selfie meme retains the same pejorative connotations as the classical selfie meme, the *reason* for these pejorative connotations is no longer contained within our reading. In other words, the "hatred of selfies" meme is now simply an arbitrary construct left to us by tradition, rather than well-reasoned social criticism directed against online vanity.

yogarfield - 2015-04-24
I went to Wendy's and actually tried the ghost pepper fries. Basically fries with velveeta, and about as spicy as milk.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-04-24

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-04-24
Did you really go to school with her? Where at homie?

yogarfield - 2015-04-24
Internet is your friend. I only met her a couple of times, she was kind of annoying. Then she had an annoying youtube channel, then fast food mascot. America, fuck yeah.

spikestoyiu - 2015-04-25
I mean, I guess she's more attractive than like the Burger King or Grimace.

Raggamuffin - 2015-04-24
It's a shame that this has gotten so corporate and commercial.

It used to be about the MEMES

and I've known what a meme is for over five years!!!!!
Hooker - 2015-04-24
Yeah, Homer's right. It is a meme.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-25
Really? Me, too!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-25
Once again, the point of the anecdote is that, if I know what a meme is, EVERYBODY knows! So l feel like I'm being taken out of context.

Nevertheless, it IS funny! I think maybe I'll put it on my Twitter profile.

But I probably won't.
