One of his writers is a Ram Jam fan.

Ram Jam looks like my college mascot.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-05-14

Melonkuma looks like a Digimon.

Not a Pokmon. A Digimon.

There's a difference between the way the two look.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-05-14

The key difference is how they answer "Will this induce nightmares in the 10-and-under crowd?"

we could use more funashi videos, I really like the one where he calls a press conferences and then trashes the room.

HOO have you been talking to!

sasazuka - 2015-05-14

To be fair, the whole idea of having everything represented by a mascot *is* kind of rooted in Japanese culture if you think of the mascots as being like cuter anthropomorphizations of Shinto gods, and, as plenty of manga/anime demonstrate, there are Shinto gods for nearly everything.

Not that I'm really calling mascots "Shinto gods in disguise", I'm just saying that the idea of thousands of mascots representing things isn't very far off from Shintoism.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-05-14

Were you thinking of this?

I've never seen that before (pretty cute), I was mainly thinking of the episodes of KAMICHU! where Yurie goes to the world of the Gods that showed gods for everything, even Laserdiscs, plus the two local goddesses on KANNAGI: CRAZY SHRINE MAIDENS.

Still, 1500 mascots in a whole country, some of the larger Furry conventions bring in more than that, don't they?

They should have replaced David Letterman with John Oliver.

Ram Jam, Black Betty and (Stuck On The) Turnpike are in serious rotation.

Hey Boomer, I think that number is for official corporate mascots, not for individual mascot-suit enthusiasts. I don't think Japan has a very large furry community, but their "cute mascot costume" (kigurumi) community is a decent size.

For example:

Enjoy!

I think the 1500 count is just for government-funded mascots, at the national, regional, prefectural, and municipal levels, like everything from small village mascots to the fairly world-famous Pipo-kun of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.

If you're including private sector mascots, I wouldn't be surprised if the number is in the five digits in Japan alone. Not that the United States of America doesn't have thousands of mascots of its own, though they tend to be less common outside of sports teams, from high school to the major leagues.

Maggot Brain - 2015-05-14

That fact that a prison has a plum-headed mascot is prof positive that we are living in robocop times.

The Mothership - 2015-05-14

The Treasury mascot was really funny.
