Put a bunny suit on it and I'm sold.

fedex - 2015-06-01

more like a Corgi suit from the build I think

So in summary, they have built a metal cheetah, it now knows how to get past barriers, it can run on batteries for an extended distance, and they've fitted it with lasers.

Shall I assume the next one will feature infrared sensors and whirling blades?

gravelstudios - 2015-06-01

You know that the military is funding this. Which means one thing. Somebody at the pentagon is having wet dreams about a whole army of these things with attached machine guns just tearing through some third world hell hole killing 'terrorists'.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-06-02

A - They would be a lot cheaper than soldiers, so I'm thinking military contractors would resist having them used in combat.

B - Even if they were used in combat, they would likely be assembled in third-world factories. The local residents would just switch on the ones that haven't shipped yet to fight the ones attacking them.

infinite zest - 2015-06-01

That :D should say D:

These will probably be the last things we ever see

yogarfield - 2015-06-02

my face is :D, but only because i really, REALLY want to kicktest these.

Robin Kestrel - 2015-06-01

A DARPA subcontractor is also working on the teeth and claws but has not released that particular video (the one with the sheep) to the public yet.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-06-01

It will have teeth & claws if we're LUCKY.

Engineers have been closely studying mantis shrimp jaw parts.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-01

People feeling threatened are being silly. It will take many years of work before anything with near the cost/dangerousness ratio of a kid with an AK47 is achieved + so much can go wrong with robots, they need constant maintainance, electricity etc.

fedex - 2015-06-01

love...

Binro the Heretic - 2015-06-01

A kid with an AK47 can be distracted by sex.

Robot cheetahs don't care.

chumbucket - 2015-06-02

True, but the discussions about the actual use/existence of fully autonomous killing machines probably should be happening now before the technology becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. You know, kind of like money pumping into the Los Alamos labs in the early 40's.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-02

@ Binro, Thats how you make *more* kids with AK47s!! Compare that to the cost of constructing something like this.
Though I wonder how it would compare if you could mass produce these as easily as say a car, compared to the cost of raising and teaching and feeding a kid until they are old and competent enough to wield an AK. hmmm..
Also @ chumbucket yes fair point but dont you think this sort of development is inevitable as long as there is more than one world power? ie. some competition.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-02

Also if we created truly intelligent self replicating machines I think that would be the best thing ever. Whether or not humanity is wiped out after that is not important imo.
Quick explanation: Humans are severely limited to a certain kind of lifestyle on an earth like planet. We have hardcoded misconceptions about things like statistics and physics and we just cant fathom certain concepts like more than 3 spatial dimensions. Our machine progeny would not be so limited and could go off and explore and colonize the universe and achieve crazy advanced science.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-02

Sort of getting a bit ahead of myself with that last comment tho.

chumbucket - 2015-06-02

No I don't think that last comment was too far afield from modern speculation. Reminds me of the Matrix principle of allowing a sovereign such as "Zero One" to exist, albeit temporarily.
As for the inevitability, I guess you may be right there, but I'm still not over the fact that we are no where near "Star Trek" road to advancement and respect for technology. That it might actually have to take a military/political disaster to get back on track. That's a bummer.

Yes, I lean all my hopes and fears on science fiction.

bopeton - 2015-06-01

Go check out my Kickstarter to develop EMP shotgun shells

bac - 2015-06-01

You don't get my money for your kickstarter project, but you do get my stars.

RockBolt - 2015-06-01

Now it runs and isn't tied down

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-06-02

Remember to aim for its laser sensors when you're trying to bring it down.

TeenerTot - 2015-06-02

Just lie down in front of it. It's base programming of "jump over obstacle" will keep you alive.

Gmork - 2015-06-02

In the beginning, we all made the "skynet" jokes.

In the end, no one will be laughing.
