"Unfortunately for Graham, the tendrils of the international homosexual conspiracy run too deep to ever truly escape: As CNN Money notes, the Billy Graham Associationís new bank, the North Carolina-based BB&T, doesnít just depict gays in commercials but actively supports them as a sponsor of Miami Beach Gay Pride."

Boy, they can't even give the slightest indication that they're a bank any more, can they?

You know, Wells Fargo could do that exact same montage with me, December 23rd 2000. I was coming home from my first semester in college from Wisconsin and Wells Fargo convinced me to open up an account earlier in the fall. It was my first bank account and they didn't explain to me anything about overdrafting. Due to snow my flight got delayed and I was thirsty so I got a bottle of water, I was hungry so I got a snickers, and repeated this through various delays until I finally got home at 4 in the morning. December 24th was when I was going to do all of my Christmas shopping, and instead I got a call saying I was 0 in debt. Because of 4 bottles of water and four candy bars. So Christmas was ruined for me anyway. So fuck yourself Bank. Or, if you're lesbians, scissor yourself. By any means please fuck wells fargo.

My first real bank account as an adult had all of their receipt printers and ATMs set up so that if you were overdrafted, the "-" on your recipt was left justified while the actual balance was right justified, so if you only had a small overdraft it was very easy to think you had a little left in the bank.

If I remember right they also charged you a fee for checking your balance on another bank's ATM, and they would charge you an overdraft fee for the ATM fee, of course, so if you were overdrawn could end up paying close to to check your balance.

Also the overdraft notices they mailed out to you would usually show up at least 5 business days after the overdraft, which was enough time that you would start getting charged a daily penalty. I'm pretty certain that for a while they were actually deducting your daily overdraft penalty from your account and then chargint you a overdraft fee for that withdrawal, too. At any rate, I once had a overdraft balloon to over 0 in a matter of days even though I didn't actually withdraw any money during that time, then after I borrowed money from my family and deposited it to cover the balance, they charged me another fee for the time it took the check to clear (the teller assured me that they stopped charging fees at the point of deposit) and that extra day put me shot of clearing the overdraft, which then blew up to almost 0 over the next two days (even though, again, I wasn't withdrawing anything), and since I was barely out of high school and didn't know shit I didn't call them out on it.

Around the same time a friend of mine had a 00 charge erroneously put on his credit card due to some kind of internal error by the card provider, and it took over a year of contacting them a few times a week for him to get it refunded, even though they had confirmed that it was a mistake on their end within a week or two.

Fuck a bank.

OH, I also recently noticed that at some point between a couple years ago )when federal regulations forced banks to make overdraft protection an opt-in feature instead of an opt-out feature) and January of this year, my bank has added overdraft protection back on to my account, even though I most definitely did not opt in when the law was passed and they had people standing outside all of their branches for weeks warning everyone who went in that i they didn't opt in their overdraft protection would be deactivated when the change went into effect.

I wonder if when Santander bought them out it opened some kind of loophole, since they're no longer a US company.

I mean, I get the concept of being penalized for money that you don't have. And if they explained it that way, well, I figured that out by first grade. "I want something that's 2 dollars but I only have one dollar. Better wait until I have another dollar."

To be fair, I got the call from Wells Fargo and I told the banker to fuck off or something along those lines, and that I wasn't going to pay it. And even though I told her to fuck herself she was able to drop the fees to about 100 dollars given the situation. And I'm stuck with Wells Fargo because of a joint account due to a previous marriage and they were pretty cool about making it impossible for the other person to access because she just split town (the divorce court wasn't as nice). At least in Occupy Portland, Wells Fargo was the main target, and I felt bad for the bankers who were more-or-less held hostage downtown (the occupy camp was a block away from the WF building) the same way as I feel bad for canvassers who are told to fuck off by others on their lunch break, but have to continue to harass. A classic example of the 99 working for the 1.

But this is bullshit. If Scott Fucking Walker all of a sudden started saying he was OK with the Gayfolk I wouldn't give a shit. You can be tolerant, or gay, anything else and still be a fucking prick. Wells Fargo is the world's biggest prick.

Remember when Amazon had the pro-gay Kindle ad that had a dig against iPads, and then a bunch of evangelicals said they were boycotting Kindle and only buying Apple?

And then Tim Cook came out of the closet?

I love this timeline.

Yesterday Youtube recommended a Clive Barker clip where he was arguing with an absolutely insane Christine O'Donnell in the late 90s about gays, and she was insisting it was a choice. He was pretty calm about it but she was just kind of looking brainwashed and really happily described having had friends who had died of AIDS. It just reminded me of the people that raised me, who basically told me gay was worthless and as I realized I was gay, believed I was truly nothing.

Ads like this will get to my heart because there was literally fucking nothing on TV to even indicate to me that people like me even existed growing up and its easy to forget that with the visibility gays have compared with before, but it will always mean something to me when corporations, even inherently shitty ones, go out of their way to prove that they support social change.

Think about this too: Wells Fargo is now officially trying to market to gay couples and risk the ire of the Religious Right. You may be quite certain that Wells Fargo has looked at the possible gains and losses from this, and decided that pro-gay is a more valuable demographic these days than anti-gay.

Guess who's getting marginalized now? And it couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch.

Anaxagoras
Yup.

Wells Fargo is indeed a shitty company, with all sorts of deceptive & "shit-on-the-customer" behavior. I'm pretty sure they cynically calculated if it would be profitable to market to gays.

And yet, this ad is awesome anyways. I still won't ever bank with Wells Fargo, but I'm super glad they made this ad.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then they market to you, then you win.
Hooker
Wait, marketing to you precedes winning? Because I've been marketed to for fucking ages and I'd love it if that other shoe would drop.

Wells Fargo doesn't discriminate. It overcharges and steals homes from everybody.
