The first one was great! I hated this scene, however. They totally ruined Reptile's canonical story and powers.

On the other hand, the movie version of Kano was so awesome that Boon and Vogel later retconned game Kano to be more like he was in this film. True story!

That is a good point. MK1 came out around the time when it was mostly PC games and a few console RPGS had actual storylines, so Pac-Man being friends with ghosts or Here's To Your Fuck Frank as Bowser made no sense to me, since it was already established that Pac-Man hated ghosts and Bowser was a dinosaur. MK had a storyline, but everybody skipped it, and it was only through the movie that I realized that it was a tournament, so Kano became the fugitive we know today and not just some guy who rips hearts out because of that. And a few years later console games became more cinematic, and franchises like Resident Evil stayed (I believe) mostly true to its source material and not the other way around. Great job, Paul NR Anderson!

Yeah, the effects in this scene haven't aged well, but over all, still probably the the most successful video game to movie adaptation. It achieved being exactly what it was supposed to be, which is as much as a genre movie can hope for.

I'll watch it again if it's on TV or something; I remember the movie theatre I wanted to see it at still treated it like an R rated movie so I got my dad to take me. And he hated it, so I guess I didn't like it either. I'd argue that Silent Hill was the best. I didn't see it by choice, but my ex's friend was in town and we were going to see a movie, any movie, and that one was on. It was at least pretty, stayed pretty true to the plot and was directed by someone who also did Brotherhood of the Wolf, which was an awesome movie. You could also argue for District 9: it was speculated that it was a Halo prequel and if it did well (which it did) then Alex Garland would go ahead and start writing the Halo movies (hence the backing from Peter Jackson's Wingnut studios). Plus Postal.

I don't watch a ton of VG adaptations or anything, but I don't really get why they fuck them up so much- playing through Red Dead Redemption I teared up several times, mostly thanks to the Jose Gonzales songs but also just because it was such a simple Western on its surface but also about as complex as Deadwood with its characters that go beyond the gunslinger. But if they made a movie out of it, I'd guarantee it'd suck.

That's a really good question, and the actual answer is: nobody knows. Johnny could not have been punching Shokan balls, as there were no Shokans in the area, and his sunglasses were not being ruined, as they had already been destroyed by Goro in an earlier scene. As for making blockbusters, it would be logistically impossible for him to start filming a new movie during this scene. What's more, this particular segment of Mortal Kombat the Movie was meant to represent the events of MKII the game, and the only blockbuster he filmed during that time was "Mortal Kombat II". Cage's Mortal Kombat II was based on the events of the Mortal Kombat II tournament, and the script wasn't even started until after the tournament was over and he'd returned to Earth Realm (it's worth ntoing that even the canonicity of that blockbuster is in dispute, as it is only mention in his non-canonical MKII ending, and Shao Khan invaded Earthrealm so soon after his defeat in Outworld, that Cage would have been hard-pressed to film that movie, let alone release it (and even if he did, there'd be no way it would have been "a blockbuster", since potential movie-going audiences were being hunted by Shao Khan's death squads). So I don't think he was filming a movie during this fight, either.

EH you're the only person I can think of who is very invested in the MK Lexicon the way others are into Star Wars and the like. I don't really follow it but like I said above I think it's cool that they made a mountain out of a molehill of a fighting game's plot. It can be argued that Street Fighter did it too, but as far as I know the stories don't remain consistent (like in the anime series Ken and Ryu are undercover agents or something, but that's quickly abandoned in the video game if mentioned at all, etc.) So that being said what did you think of the True Detective-esque MK: Legacy with Casper Van Dien and the like?

Or to be more specific, things like Johnny Cage having been a Power Ranger but kinda going the way of Justin Bieber, or a martial artist Corey Feldman, Power Rangers having still been on the air in this MK Movie's timeline.. etc.

Bur I don't know if I'd go THAT far; I know a fair bit about Mortal Kombat, yet I am not involved in the Kommunity, and I'll be the first to admit that there are easily hundreds of fans whose knowledge of MK could put me to shame! I don't kosplay, I don't do fan-art or fakes, I don't play kompetitively, and I certainly don't involve myself in the decades-long drama on the various fan forums. I know the basic plots, I've played nearly all the games (Special Forces being the sole exception), I know a little about some of the people behind-the-scenes, I can identify many of the better-known fan kharacters, and I've purchased maybe worth of collectibles so far. That's really it. I am a happy amateur, and do not wish to misrepresent myself!

I have not seen much of MK Legacy, but what I saw was OK. It was definitely not "Mortal Kombat", but after so many years of films, komics, the kartoon, the TV show, and of course the massively infuriating Warner Brothers reboot, you learn to accept alternate-universe retellings for what they are. MK Legacy kaptured the essence of Kombat, and that's what kounts!

And yeah, it's pretty cool how John Vogel and pals fleshed out the MK universe. Street Fighter started strong, but the storyline to that series turned into an awful mess, even just sticking with the in-game stories. The game continuity in Mortal Kombat is remarkably consistent - sorry, "konsistent" - and the design team has always been really willing to engage with fans about the story. There's also a lot of good-natured trolling and inside jokes, like the Reiko-is-Khan conspiracy, the Kano Transformation rumor, Zebron, and how both "Ermac" and "Skarlet" were rumored to be kharacters for years, eventually being added (in MKIII and MK9 respectively) as a gift to the fandom.
