cue alien infestation in three...two...one....

yogarfield - 2015-06-13

man, imagine what a fart sounds like in there.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-06-13

Now that you mention it, it does look like the perfect place to film a low budget scifi/horror movie.

jfcaron_ca - 2015-06-13

If the TBR face wasn't so recognizable, it could easily pass for some weird alien tech, especially in that grey light. The ladder and lights setup could be space/regular archaeologists trying to figure out what it is without realizing their imminent fate.

Lurchi - 2015-06-13

so what do they actually DO when the water runs out?

SolRo - 2015-06-13

We're still arguing on just how little water humans really need, so we can save water for our precious almond, rice and citrus farms

Lurchi - 2015-06-13

I'd trade the population of southern California for cheap almonds any day.

SolRo - 2015-06-13

didn't know you hated Mexicans so much

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-06-13

they need to get desalinization plants going pronto. They built one in SoCal years ago but they never used it, they are just beginning to get the ball rolling on using it sometime in the near future. Essentially we really are royally fucked.

My roommate takes 40 minute showers a few times a week because she "really needs it". I take showers as short as possible, 1 to 3 minutes long. Luckily I am not paying the water bill because she knows I contribute so little to it. But that's what this state is dealing with. People just have no concept of "there is no more" until it's too fucking late.

garcet71283 - 2015-06-13

As a washingtonian, i would trade the population of california for a coke

SolRo - 2015-06-13

residential water use doesn't amount to much for California.

Even if we entertained garcets and lurchis genocidal hatred of Hispanics and wiped out all non-farming water use in the state, it still wouldn't be as much as almond growers alone use.

ashtar. - 2015-06-13

One of the things I love about the west is how much everyone else hates Californians. And Coloradonians, because they're probably transplanted Californians.

baleen - 2015-06-13

Seattle and now Portland is being conquered by Californians.

I recently watched San Andreas and while it was a shitty movie, seeing some of the worst places in America get totaled was pretty nice.

The answer to Lurchi's question is that they will move to the PNW, which is predicted to have some of the best weather over the coming century. There is likely going to be a megadrought starting in the middle of the century that will last decades.

So sorry Sexy Duck Cop, but your precious hot tub equipped Los Angeles apartment that mysteriously costs 0 a month and is "within walking distance to everything" is pretty fucked.

godot - 2015-06-13

Have you read Bacigalupi's "The Water Knife?"

RockBolt - 2015-06-13

Maybe fix the antiquated water rights laws that are still wasting what water there is

https://projects.propublica.org/killing-the-colorado/story/was ting-water-out-west-use-it-or-lose-it

SolRo - 2015-06-13

The long and short of the problem in California is;

Farming is 80% of all human water usage in the state.

Farming is 2% of California's GDP.

Any idiot could see where water use needs to be catastrophically cut, but the farmers have good lobbyists.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-14

So in other words, SolRo hates farms and would rather we eat Mexicans instead.

Even if we entertained SolRo's cannibalistic hatred of Hispanics and replaced all farms with squat concrete slaughterhouses, I don't think the plan would go over very well. It's a fine idea, but Latinos have good lobbyists.

ashtar. - 2015-06-15

As the Native Americans said:

Only when the last almond tree has turned brown,
and the last rice paddy dried up,
and the last citrus orchard plowed under,
will we realize that we can't eat hispanics.

pastorofmuppets - 2018-03-19

Just popping in from the future, where water is still used stupidly in CA: http://www.bbc.com/news/business-36161580
