Pretty contemporary PUA tactics too, right down to threatening violence and calling her a lesbian after she turns you down, but nowadays that part would be done in the internet.

simon666 - 2015-06-26

What is PUA again?

Fine. I googled it. Pick Up Artist. I'm not sure if it's an art, but definitely a knack.

If he had managed to pick that girl up, he might have made it to the end of the movie. Then, he would have died anyway.

infinite zest - 2015-06-27

I'm just going to say it. This movie really sucked.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-06-27

It did not.

infinite zest - 2015-06-27

It did too!

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-27

It's pretty good. Better than the original. Deeply flawed like every De Palma movie I've seen, but the flaws are part o what makes it entertaining.

And the set design and locations are hard to argue with.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-27

It's kind of like watching The Godfather remade in the style of Saturday Night Fever on the set of every 80s Michael Mann production, as long as you don't expect it to be on the level of Taxi Driver or Touch of Evil (or even Theif, speaking of Michael Mann) then it's pretty entertaining an the social satire/commentary is left far enough in the background that it doesn't ruin it (because it's far too hamfisted to be up front, but as it is it adds a bit more dimension to everything). For me it's a really good piece of fun, middlebrow cinema, and that is a rare thing because middlebrow is the worst.

The first Mission: Impossible is a perfect movie.

Hooker - 2015-06-27

Actually, while Mission: Impossible's flaws are necessary to give it its nightmarish quality, Calito's Way doesn't have any real flaws to speak of.

infinite zest - 2015-06-27

I liked it the first time I saw it; by that point I was already pretty versed in Tony Montana speak from Wu Tang Clan and Nas songs, but every fucking dorm room has a fucking scarface poster and it's not a very accurate portrayal of the actual world of the cocaine trade; I could see someone who cooks crystal meth watching Breaking Bad and saying "oh yeah.. that works" but I can't imagine too many coke dealers now or in the past thinking that Scarface was anything but kind of a joke

infinite zest - 2015-06-27

Mission Impossible surprised the hell out of me. Basically Mission Impossible was like my dad's generation's Miami Vice. They're gonna cheese it up, it's full of Tom Cruise teeth, etc. but De Palma nailed it. To come full circle Mann's Miami Vice..

diarrhea

infinite zest - 2015-06-27

But the best mission impossible is Brad Bird's Ghost Protocol. Seriously that movie is great! Also Snake Eyes was totally the shit!
