holy crap, my friends and i used to joke about starting a "Oompahcore" band. Glad to see it was a thing.

as my musical skills are limited to playing the tuba

These guys were a huge influence on my band in 9th grade. It was started by some kids the year before as a polka band but nobody knew how to play their instruments. In 9th grade I came on as guitarist and producer (because I owned a boombox with a built in mic) and the trombone player borrowed a snare drum and hi hat and became the best drummer i've ever known to this day.

Do you know Polkacide? They're still around.

Also tuba is hard. I don't have much brass experience but I'd put it just under French Horn.

My grandpa in law played the accordion really well. He could do pretty much any Frankie Yankovic song. We always joked about starting an accordion/bassoon/tuba band. Speaking of Yankovics, would you say that Weird Al was the grandfather of accordion punk? I can't think of anybody before him that was mixing the two genres.

The Toons released The Punk Polka back in '79.

Weird Al's first airtime on the Dr. Demento Show was in '76 but he didn't release an album until '83, and I'd say "I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead" is his first documented foray into anything that could really be characterized as "punk polka" (and even that's debatable).

What's interesting to me, especially hearing it for maybe the second time since the 80s, is how similar that Toons song sounds to Weird Al, the singing style is almost identical. I assume they were familiar with him since both were Dr. Demento discoveries, but it's still interesting that they did a release with the classic Weird Al sound three years before Weird Al did.

Fucking Dr. Demento Show made me what I am today.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-02

Maybe I could sue him for that.

Yeah me too. I checked his website and I don't see any upcoming events, which is a bummer because he was literally doing talks across the street from me and I could've gone but I didn't because of some girl. :(

And she didn't like my mix! I told her to listen to joy division and watch strozek at the same time. Ok I'm done :(
