"ANYONE can marry someone of the opposite sex! What the hell else do you people want?"

memedumpster - 2015-07-04

Is this from the new RoboCop movie? There isn't a single accurate statement in this entire video.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-04

I'm not saying you're wrong, but explain. Pick out a sampling of statements, and show why you believe them, all, to be inaccurate.

The bigots lost. Just be happy!

JK

See, I'm not so sure any more! It *used* to be that the LGBT position was on the side of reason, civility, and good sense; these last couple weeks, however, seem to have unleashed all the worst elements, or at least all the laziest impulses, of the currently winning side. (then again, maybe we were always at war with Eurasia?)

Memedumpster is, of course, perfectly entitled to disagree with any of the propositions advanced by this video, but making a very extreme, falsifiable statement ("There isn't a single accurate statement in this entire video."), and then making not even the slightest effort to support this statement, is rather disheartening to say the least.

betabox - 2015-07-04

Oh bloo bloo bloo. After millennia of oppression, just give us a few fucking weeks to be happy.

Is that too much to ask?

Killer Joe - 2015-07-04

Well, I'm not him, but I'll jump around at random to look a few choice cutz

1:22 NATURAL MARRIAGE CIVILIZES MEN
From... barbarism? Doesn't mean anything, might just be shitty writing, but I doubt it.

1:40 GAY MARRIAGE HAS NO BENEFITS!
I'm pretty sure the stabilizing factors listed are pretty much the same, e.g.
gay folk can adopt and it will provide EVERY benefit listed for us natural types.

2:25 NO KIDS IN A NATURAL MARRIAGE IS THE EXCEPTION!
Which undermines the whole making kids angle they take.

3:10 (Under the header "Your religious freedom is overruled") CATHOLIC CHARITIES TO STOP ADOPTION SERVICE
The two things have nothing to do with each other. I assume that unattributed headline is actually about state/federal governments not allowing discrimination against same sex couples adopting children. While that group offered a service, that service is still framed withing legal standards, just like a soup kitchen run by nuns still needs to pass inspections. So yeah, the government can overrule your religious organization's policies in the face of legal requirements, that's nothing new, and it's not inhibiting your right to worship as you please. Further, that's about gay people adopting, not marrying.

4:00 IS THIS DISCRIMINATION? NO!
They conflate 'promoting' marriage with 'allowing' marriage.

3:30 GAYS CAN ALREADY COMMIT TO EACHOTHER!
Sure can! But, they neglect the pile of legal benefits and rights that go along with the structure of a marriage, everything from tax benefits to veteran's health coverage to visitation rights in a medical emergency. A civilized society is based on plenty of things.

Add the mess of un-cited horror stories (ain't right to work states a bitch sometimes?) and there ya go.

tl;dr, it's lazy horseshit at best, manipulative hogshit at worst.

PS - (it is manipulative hogshit)

memedumpster - 2015-07-05

EvilHomer, I went to hang up a portrait of you to keep me forever young, but my insurance agent said my homeowner's policy wouldn't cover sudden acts of catastrophic ironic entropy if it ages so fast it takes down the whole wall.

You use words like "logic" and "falsify" like a German shepherd says "I love lasagna." They're just animal noises to you.

Troll the porch.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-05

No, I use the words "logic" and "falsify" as they are meant to be used, i.e. correctly.

It is easy to falsify your proposition: as an absolute statement, all it requires for your proposition to be shown to be false is for one single statement made in this video to be accurate. That's not "obfuscation" or "lasgna" or whatever other trollspeak term you might choose to use here; that's logic.

Anyway, my main point here wasn't so much to show that your proposition was false (although it is), but rather, to prompt you to flesh out your arguments a little bit. I am asking you to examine this video critically, and in so doing, to engage your higher cognitive facilities; to "think", as the ancients once called it. The reason I do this is because, as stated above, I am getting more than a little disturbed by what I consider to be the generally low quality of discourse surrounding recent sociological issues. As betabox says (and I fully agree with him on this!), this should be a time for celebration... and yet it is not. The wake of 6/26 has become a time for ignorance, pettiness, and divisiveness. Do not feed into this. You are (or rather, you could be) better than this.

Killer Joe gets it! Killer Joe is able to, firstly, watch the video, with an eye to understanding what is being said (one of the biggest problems with reflexive bigotry is that it precludes proper critical analysis! How can you claim to oppose an argument if you do not even take the time to understand what it is you're disagreeing with?), and secondly, he is able to vocalize *precisely* what it is about the video that he finds objectionable. Thank you, Killer Joe.

Ultimately, what matters here is not gay rights, nor Christianity, nor families, nor laws, nor any other of these transient, incidental things. What matters here is *reason* - if we can promote reason, knowledge, and understanding, freeing our minds from the grips of ignorance, control, and sophistry, then ultimately, what *should* be will rise naturally to the top. Removing unconstitutional roadblocks to the right of LGBT individuals to seek happiness is wonderful, but it is wonderful because it flows naturally (I would argue) from a chain of objective, dispassionate reason. Not because "it is the right thing to do" or "the group I hate thinks otherwise"!

Why is this distinction important? Well, because we cannot be throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. If LGBT marriage is no longer unjustly restricted by the coercive machinations of the state (who had no morally valid authority over such matters in the first place), then that is great! But it really doesn't matter at all in the long run if, in the process of correcting this grave historical injustice, Americans start acting dumber and more irrationally-polarized than ever before.

memedumpster - 2015-07-05

tl;dr

EvilHomer - 2015-07-05

^ tl;dr

Precisely my point. Orwell was right; we're turning into a nation of memedumpsters.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-05

Sorry, that was cruel of me. I do not wish to cyberbully you. What I should have said was, "we are turning into a nation of people who are not just unwilling to think, but may actually be incapable of thinking." People are so used to short political slogans and spastic jump cuts now, that they typically can't follow lines of argument longer than two or three sentences without shutting down; hence why I link the "tl;dr cliche" to my arguments above.

Please forgive me for being unkind to you. That is not the pony way.

memedumpster - 2015-07-05

I want to give a shout out to your caretakers at the community home, EvilHomer. If you good folks monitor your residents' Internet use, know that we love EvilHomer and don't take his antics seriously. Also, I intend to write a book about my time on the Internet, and I am think of calling it "EvilHomer for the Chicken Soup Soul." I would be interested in interviewing you guys, I bet you got some great stories.

Much love.

Hazelnut - 2015-07-05

For EvilHomer's delightfully sententious lectures on what he calls logic.

Xenocide - 2015-07-04

Natural marriage! Organic, free-range marriage. No GMO's here! Marriage isn't a social construct we made up, it's actually harvested naturally from the saliva of yaks and certain sloths.

betabox - 2015-07-04

I love it. After months or years of our side "redifining" marriage, the bigots and haters suddenly get to redifine "Natural."

The irony is delicious.

betabox - 2015-07-04

Sorry, . . of them claiming that our side is "redifining" marriage,

il fiore bel - 2015-07-04

Well, at least they didn't try to use the Bible to back themselves up on this one.

I know this was just posted to YouTube this week, but I could swear this is a dupe from a while ago.

In any case, bravo on the contortions you've put yourself through here, lady.
