Anyone here from Estonia? If so, can you recommend a nice town with some cheap houses by the sea? It's high on my list of places to flee to once the Second American Civil War breaks out.

jfcaron_ca - 2015-07-12 I've been to the capital Tallinn and the second-biggest city Tartuu, and visited the countryside a bit. This was in 2013. The whole country is quaint as fuck, even the major cities, so just pick based on price and proximity to an airport that flies to Western Europe for convenience.

pressed peanut sweepings - 2015-07-12 The way things are going, Estonia might be under Russian control within a decade. You'd be safer in America than in any of the Baltic or central European states.

Bort - 2015-07-13 "Language isolate? Estonian is pretty damn similar to Finnish."
I can believe that, since Finnish for "you might solve a mystery or rewrite history" is "I'm going to stroke it, your arms are broken".

Maggot Brain - 2015-07-13 Uhg, you are all so wrong~Estonia is a lot like French and by that I mean around 1800 they sat down and decided to make up a national language. It's basically Finnish with a vowel length accent and a whole bunch of words they literally made up. Latvian and Lithuanian are more like a living Proto-Slavic but Latvian has a heavy German influence while Lithuanian has tried to make a point of ridding it self of Polish and Russian words.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-13 Yeah, proximity to Russia and the likelihood that it'll be first on the list of reconquests are my biggest tallies against Estonia. I could always move to Estonia, then move again a few years later, but that seems a bit pointless.
Other countries on my list include back to Britain (which is an Orwellian hellhole right now, but I might be able to get into my grandparent's will), Mexico (which seems like a fun place, and will probably re-annex the southwestern United States soon), Japan (emotionally and mentally I'm already a clinically depressed Japanese man, plus I could finally fulfill my dream of being a Japanese pro-wrestler whose gimmick is a Caucasian uyoku dantai ultra-nationalist), Nigeria, and any random Pacific island which has electricity, sharks, and wifi access.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-13 Maggot Brain, that sounds like Italian even more than French. Italian as a language hardly even exists inside the country, it's an amalgamation of something like a dozen similar but distinct languages (that are now called "dialects") that was created as part of the Italian unification in the 1850s. If you actually go to Italy, the locals aren't generally going to be speaking "Italian" with one another, they'll be speaking Tuscan or Venetian or whatever language is spoken where you happen to be.
Not saying you're wrong at all, you aren't. It's just that Italian is roughly contemporary with Estonian from what you said, while French is older, old enough I think it's fair to consider it a real language now.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2015-07-14
Have you considered Vietnam? Low cost of living, friendly people, China is unlikely to invade the country anytime soon and, despite crushing poverty, people seem to be much more together and cosmopolitan than in Japan. That said, Japan's not too bad either and I've met a surprising number of Estonians in both countries for a place with a population of about a million.
And as far as places in Putin's crosshairs go, I really liked Ukraine I must say

Any chance of a "the educational value of poultry" tag?
