How is this still a thing? Shouldn't these guys have moved on to some other "outrage" by now?

Made it to about three minutes.
Binro the Heretic - 2015-07-25
They took in a bunch of money to do this. They have to throw something out there to avoid lawsuits and/or vigilante justice.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-07-25
For millions of young men, Anita Sarkeesian has become the symbol of Why Women Won't Have Sex With Me. Sadly, that's not a joke.

memedumpster - 2015-07-25
I visited Cracked for the first time in years yesterday. They had a lovely article called "Five Things I Learned Committing A Campus Sexual Assault" wherein I learned that rapists who rape unconscious girls are misunderstood victims of society. Thousands of Cracked readers took this to heart in the comments, and truly felt for the poor rapist, since when a woman says yes, she doesn't mean it, and not not consenting means she didn't say no.

If there was an Internet equivalent of a can of gasoline and a match you could use on a website and its readership, I would have done it.

So, whatever thing they go to next to be outraged about, you can pretty much guarantee that it will make you miss the innocent halcyon days of video game outrage.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-07-25
I found the "Cracked" article a lot more interesting, and I found the subject of the article reasonably sympathetic because he doesn't seem to duck responsibility, or try to shift blame. What I get out of this story is how sexist culture harms men, though some want to blame feminism for the damage.

As fucked up as it was, when I was in my 20s, no did not mean no. Women were supposed to resist, and you were supposed to overcome that. Call it "the game" or "the dance", it was sexist bullshit, a ritual that was necessary because women weren't supposed to be completely willing, because that wouldn't be feminine, or something. Gaining active consent seems forced and unnatural to me, but objectively, it's the perverse ritual that I grew up with that is forced and unnatural.

How the fuck is video games and unlimited online porn supposed to prepare a young man to relate to an actual woman? The culture exploits his powerful sexual urges and betrays him with false information, and when he fails sexually, when he's frustrated and ashamed, because the culture teaches him that sex is what makes a man, there are youtube hucksters willing to make a buck by telling him his problem is feminism, and what women really want is to be dominated.

The MRAs are all about blaming feminism for the damage sexism does to men's lives.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-25
Hi John! How are you doing? It's good to see you back; I hope you are feeling better.

memedumpster - 2015-07-25
If every young person fell into the cultural pornovideogame rape trap, I would agree, but it's a small amount of people who just straight up fail at sentience. They should not be let out unsupervised.

infinite zest - 2015-07-26
Movies condition men for that too you know.. name one movie where romance is involved where the characters just fall in love immediately and then begin the journey of whatever the movie's about. But I do stand by what I said (was that already a year ago) I think a year ago that it seems like what Anita wants is a world where everything's cool as long as we're violent towards all genders and sexual preferences, since she defended games like GTA as good games but with very obvious sexism.

And if that's OK then you're not really solving anything. You're just making it so your Brony can beat up your tranny NPC the same way as your guy can beat up your girl NPC.. I dunno.. I'm gonna go play Borderlands 2.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-07-26
>>If every young person fell into the cultural pornovideogame rape trap, I would agree, but it's a small amount of people who just straight up fail at sentience. They should not be let out unsupervised.

But that's not the only trap they fall into. The MRAs, TFLs, PUAs, MGTOWs, Gamergaters, and even the so-called "nice guys" are all struggling to reconcile the way they've been told it's supposed to be with the way it actually is.

Feminism is not above criticism. Feminism gets men wrong sometimes. Feminists can be jerks. The other day, a woman dismissed me as "mansplaining" during a Twitter discussion of TELEVISION BINGE WATCHING, of all things. That's just bullshit.

But feminism is not what's making these young men so desperate and unhappy. That's plain old sexism. Sexism, not feminism, is why it's okay for a woman to hit a man, and yes, that's fucked up. If divorce settlements and custody agreements favor women to the detriment of the children (whose welfare is supposed to count) that's sexism.

Men and women face different aspects of the same challenge, and I believe that if they could recognize that, and work together, a great deal of progress could be made very quickly, If it's going to be "men vs. women", expect another 50 years of heartbreak, dysfunction, and shitty internet videos.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-07-26
>>Movies condition men for that too you know.. name one movie where romance is involved where the characters just fall in love immediately and then begin the journey of whatever the movie's about.

You're absolutely right about that.

>>But I do stand by what I said (was that already a year ago) I think a year ago that it seems like what Anita wants is a world where everything's cool as long as we're violent towards all genders and sexual preferences, since she defended games like GTA as good games but with very obvious sexism.

You know about the disclaimer, right?

" This series will include critical analysis of many beloved games and characters, but remember that it is both possible (and even necessary) to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of its more problematic or pernicious aspects."

She's been really clear about this. I've seen her praise the very same games she criticizes for their tropes for being good games overall.

But I'm not a gamer, so I don't understand the nuances, and frankly, whether she's right or wrong. The issue is all of these men losing their shit and making her out as some kind of criminal scam artist for making some boring you tube videos. If you disagree with her, have a different argument, shit, that's what this stuff is for. She can be wrong. You can disagree. Neither is a god-damn crime.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-07-26
Hi Homer. I'm okay, and I've never been that far away, but shit be happening.

infinite zest - 2015-07-26
Yeah I'm really not following the whole thing very closely.. ironically the first game that I really remember getting into was Super Mario Brothers 2; EVERYBODY played the Princess (or Toad on certain levels) because she was so much better than the other characters. But I had friends who stopped playing the Metroid series after they found out that Samus was a girl. This is a fun conversation to have, but things going as far as death threats are unnecessary.

I'm not really a gamer either, but I've got two games: Fallout New Vegas and Borderlands 2. And it's true, if you're the woman in BL2 you're pretty weak compared to the male characters (except for my ninja one) and I went ahead and killed the bartender lady NPC too in New Vegas because I needed bottlecaps. But in New Vegas you can be a lady who kills the same bartender lady; my character is a black guy and I don't think that's why the cops start shooting at him, it's because it's a game.

And finally, the argument about girls having barbie doll features, that's totally legit and very true, but you don't really see what I imagine your average gamer portrayed as the protagonist either: the only time I ever pictured that was in Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash, a novel that sort of predicted Second Life. He's a badass ninja but he's also a pizza delivery guy; it reads in such a way that you can interpret any way you want, but to me he's just a gamer the same way as I'm reading the book and not living in it. So anyway I think Anita makes some really good points, and anybody nitpicking on how she said this one time and that another time needs to learn about the internet because that happens all the time.

But it is fun to discuss. Glad shit be happening Mr. Holmes! As long as it's good shit! :)

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-26
OF course the counterpoint there is that the Princess in Mario 2 was "better" because she was the easy mode character. The hardcore used Luigi.

I always used the Princess.

And Chun Li for that matter, because speed was usually more fun than power.

Tulpas and biological compounds

Taunav: Salutations. My name is Taunav, I am another one of the tulpas within this system. As all of you know, tulpas can have a heavy impact on the host, including, as Quetzal demonstrated before, changing sexuality

I have actually come across a system on Steam where the tulpas are able to change the chemical cocktail within the host's brain. He wishes to remain anonymous, but he actually had his two tulpas since birth, they are as old as he is (22) and were always able to fluidly possess and switch, and have a great deal of control over the mind to the point of altering chemicals in the brain and body. I wanted to see if I could do this myself, and thus I attempted to increase levels of Adenosine Triphosphate in the body, or ATP, an essential compound in the process of cellular respiration and metabolism. The controller of the compounds in the other system, I shall call him A, said that he did it via symbolism with a command console in the mindscape. I decided to try the same, and had a computer I used myself to regulate it. I shall let Ian explain the results himself, as he was the one afflicted the most

Ian: Well...it worked. Needless to say, it worked! I had SO MUCH ENERGY yesterday. I had a bunch of stuff I had to do, but going through it was a breeze! However, it did come with some side effects. I had a MASSIVE appetite, my stomach as a BLACK HOLE. I needed more food to sustain the energy levels, and I just kept eating and eating and eating! Another side effect though was...well, to increase ATP levels, levels of adenosine had to be increased too, and adenosine is what causes drowsiness. It builds up in your blood while you're awake and goes down when you sleep. But it's also essential in the production of ATP, so more ATP=More adenosine. In the evening, I was feeling its effects, but it was really really weird....I mean...I was mentally tired, my eyes wanted to sleep, but my body...my body, no, it still had that ATP boost, and it wanted to be active and move around because it had BOUNDLESS ENERGY. So sleeping was a bit of a problem, so Taunav finally lowered the levels back to normal and once it finally wore off I was able to get some sleep.

Earlier this morning though, I had more stuff I needed to do, so he raised them again (although not as much), and once I got done with what I needed to do, they were lowered again. I'm thinking that this can be used and controlled to give me a boost of energy when I need it, it's not good to have it high all the time.

Also though, earlier I was minding my own business, doing my own thing, and then I suddenly felt a wave of euphoria wash over me, I was the happiest person alive, without a care in the world. And it was for seemingly no reason, it just happened out of nowhere. And apparantly, Taunav raised levels of seratonin and dopamine without me aware of it, to see what would happen. I guess I'm the guinea pig now...

So...any thoughts, comments, suggestions? And have your tulpas try this kind of thing out too, let's see what happens!

I cant handle so many uses of the term 'video game' I call them 'computer games'.
What should we call games that run on computers? *video* games! Because they have no audio and run on VHS machines or some shit.
Damn you yanks! its is just like the football / handegg dilemma.
Old_Zircon - 2015-07-25
I assume it's to differentiate games that use images on video screens from games like this:

magnesium - 2015-07-25
You should call them "tele-blinkies". That sounds pretty British.

Now can you explain to me why British people call costume parties "fancy dress parties" because I can't seem to get a straight answer out of anybody.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-07-25
Why would I know anything about British people?

EvilHomer - 2015-07-25
Do you really want to know why we Britons call them "fancy dress parties"? Do you REALLY? Because normally I would help you, but not if you're just going to be horrid about it.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-07-25
Youre a dratted limey? I was sure you would be a blasted yank.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-07-25
tele-blinkies is a pretty good name though

EvilHomer - 2015-07-25
I've explained this before: I'm both. My mother is from an old Scots/Welsh family who emigrated to Massachusetts way back in the colonial era. My father is English, born and raised in Surrey. They were both educated in England, met at Oxford, moved back to the States shortly before I was born.

I am a first generation immigrant with dual citizenship and two native languages: English and American. This is one of the reasons I hope Donald Trump does not become President: because I do not want to be deported back to the Old Country.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-07-25
If you were born and raised in the US you are basically an American imo. Americans are weird about that, for instance so many claiming to be Irish as their ancestors were irish. By that logic we are all Africans.

memedumpster - 2015-07-25
Yeah, Homie, sorry. You're a damned yank. You're so American you have a Monster Thickburger growth where your hemorrhoids should be. When you're cut, you bleed baconator. I bet you've never even eaten a horse.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-25
You can consider me whatever you like! The facts are as I have presented them, neither more nor less.

On a personal level I am certainly more American than I am British, yet at the same time, I have barely any family ties here in the States. I've lived in both countries, I speak both languages, and I have two passports; I eat American food, like burgers, when I am with my friends, and I eat English food, like tikka masala, when I am alone. It is the great paradox of being an immigrant: I am both, and yet I am neither. At home everywhere, yet nowhere is my home.

I guess you can say, I'm a citizen of the world.

The New Meat - 2015-07-25
What a heavy burden you bear, Homer.

I'm the son of Puerto Rican and German immigrants and grew up in eight different countries, seven of which spoke languages that actually aren't English, yet somehow I manage to get by. I guess I don't have your delicately refined sense of self.

oddeye - 2015-07-25
Great Britain is in the heart. Through EvilHomer's veins flows the mighty blood of the greatest Empire that has ever and will ever exist. There are no two ways about it.

The "Old Country" is what I call it too, sometimes Blighty but no one gets that over in the colonies.

memedumpster - 2015-07-25
EvilHomer is Persian?

EvilHomer - 2015-07-26
Don't cry for me, New Meat; the burden is heavy, but the shoulders are strong.

And no, not Persian! Persians were probably in the Top Ten Empires, but the greatest of all was the British.

memedumpster - 2015-07-26
I was being snarky. The honestly greatest empire was Macedonian, since it didn't destroy the culture of everything it touched while committing mass murder of those who worshiped different gods. It actually made an attempt to reconstruct the cultural wasteland left behind by Persia and Zoroastrianism. The British empire, being based on another shitty Levant religion, was just a bunch of tool using apes with better technology. Socially, they were primitive and completely unimpressive, everything they offered being old and tired 2000 years previous.

oddeye - 2015-07-27
Stop speaking english then you ungrateful twat

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-25
3 minutes in and it's already even stupider than I expected.

I expected it to be very stupid.
Old_Zircon - 2015-07-25
So far my favorite thing is that even when they occasionally bring up valid criticisms of Sarkeesian's videos (which, let's be honest, are about as intellectually honest as a Deepak Chopra lecture DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE ISSUES SHE IS DISCUSSING ARE REAL), they pretty consistently do the exact same stuff even more flagrantly withing seconds of criticizing it. Especially cherry picking footage out of context.

Also "free marketplace of ideas" oh for fuck's sake.
