Holy shit, I...I can't believe this is Japanese animation. Much less from 1947. What the FUCK happened?

Seriously, this 18 minute cartoon has more frames of animation in it than every piece of Japanese animation in the last 40 years combined.

You're really that surprised? It's the same reason old Popeye shorts have more animation than modern 65-episode cartoons.

Xenocide
The exact same thing happened to Japanese cartoons that happened to American ones: television. Disney and Warner Bros. theatrical shorts were seven minutes per episode, and they made maybe ten per year. A TV cartoon is 30 minutes per episode and they can make anywhere from 13-65 episodes per year, plus the margins tend to be smaller. You've got to cut quality somewhere or turning a profit would be impossible.
