I had the great privilege of attending one of his lectures when he was touring several universities in... I want to say 2001? 2002? Something like that.

Skip to about 7 to get started in English. no idea who this fellow is, but the discussion on memory alone is fascinating.

Truly worth 5 stars, at least for the first 50 minutes or so. Will have to finish later.

Thank you boner.

Yes I googled him, so I now at least have an idea of who this prestigious fellow was.

Lef - 2015-09-08

holy smokes! the images he shows at ~1:33:40 look a lot like the reverse lookups of the google image recognition systems.

Read some of his books if you're interested. "Awakenings" is the really major one.

I was partway through his latest memoir when he died :(

betabox - 2015-09-09

He was among the interestingest people ever. RIP

"The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" and "Musicophilia" are my favorites of his.

EvilHomer - 2015-09-10

I hated everything he wrote, on the grounds that my father adored him, and anything your parents like is automatically lame.

He was the Dad Rock of public intellectuals. You dorks are into Dad Rock.

Tell us about your father EvilHomer...

EvilHomer - 2015-09-10

Oh no, I'm not gonna fall for your Oliver Sacks bullshit. Very sneaky, baleen, but I can spot a Sack-attack from a mile away.

And my father was a bitter, drunken, lecherous prep school teacher, extremely well-educated but with nothing to show for his trouble, a fact that my grandparents made sure he never forgot.

In other words, he was precisely the sort of person who'd love Oliver Sacks.

Thanks for the Dutch trigger warning.

This is a great series of videos; if any of you guys enjoy this video, be sure to check out the other parts! I tried submitting a few of them some time ago, but I think they died in the Hopper... my favorites were the Gould and Rupert Sheldrake ones. It's a real treat to see the radically different ways in which the two of them approach both controversial discussions, and the people whom they disagree with!

Came here to find a glorious accent.

Found out I had dyslexia instead.
