I appreciate it when games let you invent your own gameplay styles

Is the main character supposed to be a total ripoff of Snake Plissken?

roofle - 2015-09-17

Yep. Kojima is a huge mark for American action movies, and IIRC Escape From NY was one of his favorite movies. In MGS2 Solid Snake uses "Iroquois Plisskin" as an alias.

infinite zest - 2015-09-17

Pretty much. In MGS2 Snake's codename was even Iroquois PIisskin. I think it started out in the same way that Marshal Law from Tekken is a rip off of Bruce Lee, or any myriad video game caricature you can think of, but MGS broke the fourth wall which was pretty cool.

Overlapping comments have created a time paradox

Huh. Seems weird that he'd put a character who is anti-establishment into an organized military scenario.

In other words, Oh hell no! The REAL Snake Plissken would NEVER do that!

infinite zest - 2015-09-17

If you haven't played the others, Snake starts out as sort a sort of Plissken in the earlier games, how I'd imagine Snake was before he defected when he was described as a fallen war hero. Long story short, Solid Snake ain't gonna be work on Maggie's farm no more either.

It's a very complicated story, and Snake goes from anti-establishment to establishment and back to anti-establishment, quite frequently. The key point to remember is SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS the "Snake" you play as in each game is actually a series of different Snakes, including the original Snake, a body double, and a cloned son (the son being the Snake most people are familiar with, as he's starred in at least half the games so far, including the first two). As such, you're constantly seeing different story arcs as new generations of Snake rise up to overthrow the previous regime. The original one-eyed Snake, for example, started out as a hard-bitten commando who played by his own rules. He later became a top-ranking military officer, before going rogue and turning into the Illuminati super-villain, Big Boss. ... OR DID HE??? Who knows?

But yeah, Solid Snake's alias, Iroquois Pliskin, is a direct reference to Snake Pliskin, protagonist of "Escape from NY".

A lot of people didn't watch Escape from LA, but I liked it more than NY, mostly because it had a better original Carpenter soundtrack (not the songs that were added, they sucked) but that got more into clones and holograms and such when they were still pretty fururistic. MGSV (as far as I am) borrows a lot from the multisnakes and weird iDroid i-Everything type stuff that now seems outdated but would've been cool as shit if it were in an underrated Snake Pliskin film from the mid-80s, like Escape from Gary Indiana, or Milwaukee Wisconsin.

water pistol? ok, so this is officially the most hilarious game ever.

Nikon - 2015-09-18

The water pistol's extremely handy for both clearing mines and disrupting electronics. The latter's important, as you can disable enemy COMMS and generators with them. It doesn't even leave any evidence behind, only water.

I guess I was expecting more. There are balloons and poop not being utilized.
