This was one of the first VHS tapes my family bought when we first got a VCR, although it was of course the heavily edited American version.

Both versions were heavily, though differently, edited. What I've read is that, in the Japanese version, Godzilla wins.

What I'm going to look for right now is "King Kong Escapes", a Japanese Kong movie that's very much based on the Godzilla conventions, to the extent that Kong battles a giant Mechakong.

In all edits, the battle between Kong and Big G pretty much ends in a draw.

They kick each other's asses for a while. They fall into the ocean. Godzilla slips underwater, Kong bombs off to his island.

This is the first time I've seen the japanese version. It doesn't look to me like Godzilla is a clear winner. I think I was misinformed.

I heard the same story from a couple different people, guess it's a common myth?

Some of my happiest childhood memories are sitting up late on Saturday nights watching shows like this with my folks on the local NBC affiliate. I remember the shows were sponsored by Robinson Brothers' Lincoln-Mercury. They would record new commercials every week showing off their latest deals and they always had a tame cougar sitting on the hood of one of the cars. They never got close to it, so I guess it couldn't have been that tame.

I remember watching this, "Godzilla vs The Smog Monster", "Yog: Monster from Space", "The Green Slime" the original "The Planet of the Apes", All the Universal classic monster movies and lots of stuff with Vincent Price.
