To be honest, this still seems less depressing than a life near one of the leads.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-09-23

wtf is this shit?

EvilHomer - 2015-09-23

It's a cartoon, drawn by Japanese people. It is a teenage slice-of-life story, set against the backdrop of an impending apocalypse. While just a short, it's part of a wider franchise: the famous '90s anime show, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

It may have been made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Evangelion, but I'm not sure.

tx for the explanation. Perhaps you need to be familiar with the other stuff for this to work.
Also..
Why are so many characters in anime schoolgirls? Seems disproportionate. Being in school is pretty boring and mundane. Western shows are often about men of action, like cops and fbi guys and secret service guys and so on, exciting globetrotting action!

EvilHomer - 2015-09-23

Yeah, I'm not too familiar with Evangelion myself, so this doesn't do much for me.

As for schoolgirls, they are there for two reasons:

1) it's to cater towards anime's core demographic: teenage boys, and
2) it's a fetish thing for the animators themselves.

Japanese media likes to showcase younger heroes than their Western counterparts; this is true not just in anime, but also in video games. However, it's important to note that while the central characters in Japanese media are often school children, the focus is rarely on the tedium and stress of actually being in school. Rather, the school children will be ninjas, Mobile Suit pilots, or even anthropormorphic battleships, either after school hours, or in some cases, during school hours too! Instead of studying for tests, they train to karate fight; instead of doing homework, they battle zombies. There's still that element of escapism, only it's rooted in something Japanese people can all relate to: the cold brutality of school life.

pedophilia that's why.

Gmork - 2015-09-23

Lets focus on all the things about anime that AREN'T compelling, such as the development-less characters!

EvilHomer - 2015-09-23

Wait, that doesn't sound like a good idea. Are you sure about that, Gmork? Wouldn't it be better to focus on things that ARE compelling?

Lurchi - 2015-09-23

hmm let me shut down my ad blocking so I can watch some random anime video submitted by SolRo

SolRo - 2015-09-23

the site has no ads, unless you're using such sophisticated systems as "block all videos not from youtube"

Gill_Sans - 2015-09-23

I voted this up in the hopper because something felt really strange with the way the characters heads were turning. At first I thought they might be using some 3d elements to achieve the effect, but after looking at some of the production photos I thought they might be using some object shifting in after effects, or something like that. Anyone getting some weird feeling from the movement in this?

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2015-09-24

One of the most underappreciated elements of the Rebuild movies for me is how they really make Tokyo-3 feel like an actual city with a life instead of just a backdrop for crunchy robot battles. This continues that trend - they really know how to capture the Kanagawa summer you feel around Hakone and Odawara and mix it with the Eva world.
