I think it's hard to put a pretty picture on the medical waste industry. The sarcastic liberal bullshit tactic is not the right one to take. If you watch the videos, there's no doubt it's pretty crass how they're talking about this stuff.

That's been one of the ways anti-choice loons get some track in legislature and, albeit temporary, support among the general population. Grossout tactics will always work.

I'm pretty confident this will play itself out, just as showing pictures of aborted miscarriages in lieu of actual abortion pictures will end up backfiring in the long run. I made a couple donations to Planned Parenthood after this O'keefe smear campaign came out, and apparently they have raised more money then they ever have before.

A better way to have done this:

Describe the history of the medical uses of clinical waste dating back a century. Describe how every hospital and clinic probably does something like this. They do it with miscarriages as well. Describe the use of horror tactics to discredit medical procedures dating back to the 19th century. Make sure that people understand that that "3%" of abortions is used to save the mother. The way she's pitching this is like nobody should care about the precious baby angels because it doesn't happen a lot.

Who needs more smarmy feminist self-congratulating on this issue? It's not helping. Camille Paglia was right in that the left isn't taking this seriously enough. People have to be educated.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-09-26

I like your approach there baleen. I'd also add that she needs to work on her dental hygiene as those choppers are looking pretty yellow.

betabox - 2015-09-26

I'm not going to bother watching the video, but I will question your assertion that providing a compelling history of medical advances using clinical waste will do even one iota of good.

It's an unfortunate fact of life that people have very short attention spans, and the right-wing fundies know this. Nothing that won't fit on a bumper sticker will sink into the thick skulls of the teeming masses.

Explain, explain, explain, but don't expect a significant number of people to bother listening or understanding. After all, it's not like good information isn't readily available.

EvilHomer - 2015-09-26

Yeah, it's never a good sign when someone opens an argument by calling her opponents "fucking idiots". This is Michael Savage-style propaganda - it's not meant to explore an issue, nor even to sway a skeptical audience to Ms Watson's own point of view. Rather, it speaks directly to those people who've already reached "the correct" conclusion, assuring the faithful that they have made the right choice, and that everyone Other must be evil and/or crazy. What's worse is that she doesn't even stick to her so-strongly-stated thesis ("there are no organ sales"), but instead, undermines it within the first couple minutes and starts arguing something else ("organ sales are good, and here's why")!

I've seen a few of Ms Watson's videos now, and while I'd really like to like her (she looks like my mom and decorates like Aurini, two things which are fascinating to me), this counter-productive garbage seems to be her shtick. :(

Maybe you could start making videos again, baleen? Or better yet, take video of Ms Watson, and re-dub her with audio from Professor Paglia?

Old_Zircon - 2015-09-26

Some acknowledgement of the fact that abortions are unpleasant, morally ambiguous and potentially emotionally traumatic procedures that should nevertheless be left to the discretion of individual women and their healthcare providers would go a long way but fuck it, the left are every bit as reactionary as the right these days, despite, in my opinion at least, being on the correct side of issues more often (leaving aside how reductive and problematic the whole idea of binary "sides" is, of course).

Void 71 - 2015-09-26

SJWs who think social media-style trolling is an effective form of rhetoric should just go all the way with it.

"I agree that selling baby parts is bad. Lets shoot the aborted fetuses out of a cannon instead, or use them as gator bait. *sarcasm*"

Since modern political discourse is more about pwning the opposition than putting forth a logical argument, that's the only path forward. I look forward to a future when the Senate floor turns into a live-action Twitter feed.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-09-26

It boils down to abandoning any pretension of conversation and mutual understanding in favor of insular moral masturbation. The right wing in America has been guilty of this for a long time. With social media, the left embraced it with a level of enthusiasm that is downright embarrassing. It's especially embarrassing considering how they like to think of themselves as being the smart ones.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-09-26

The Greeks taught Rhetoric as an essential skill for the citizen, Logic was left as optional. Not much has changed in the intervening few millennia.

Playing Homers Advocate for a moment: There are some rational reasons for not encourage research with fetal tissues. Let's say we discover some commercially relevant thing, perhaps that fetal brain tissue can regenerate lost brain tissue in adults. Or some other thing dependant upon some specific tissue. There's going to be a lot of pressure to develop a supply line, no? Martin Shkreli would be all up in this thing like flies on poop. And ladies, imagine the job opportunities!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-09-26

>>This is Michael Savage-style propaganda - it's not meant to explore an issue, nor even to sway a skeptical audience to Ms Watson's own point of view.

THEY'RE NOT FUCKING SELLING BABY PARTS! There you go. Issue explored.

This isn't Michael Savage politics. As I understand it, it's a completely reasonable response to Andrew Brietbart politics. Somebody put together a fake video (a photo of a miscarriage is used to represent an abortion) to suggest that Planned Parenthood is "selling baby parts", which is the talking point you keep seeing on Twitter. Is it a lie, or is it not a lie? That's what this video is about.

>>Ehh, it's a morally grey area and neither side handles it well.

I don't understand. Are they RENTING out baby parts?

baleen - 2015-09-27

Regarding fetal stem cells in research: They are the most useful thing in the universe.

There is no "supply" problem. God has insured that 20% of women miscarry in the 1st trimester. It's likely far more than that, the miscarriages are just mistaken for periods. It's almost like our Holy Father is saying. "Take, my children, take of this fetal bounty so that you might cure cancer and Parkinson's."

If you watch the O'Keefe videos, there is a whole lot to be concerned about if you don't know what you're looking at, JHM.

I feel like one of those annoying people who (still) says "Why are you so pissed off about the NSA? Didn't you know what the NSA was before Ed Snowden?"

baby cake orgy

Great, now I'm hungry

Binro the Heretic - 2015-09-26

What's worse is I don't think most of the people who are anti-choice believe their own bullshit. They just like the idea of having power over people.

Unfortunately, this just happens to be one of those issues where they can come up with magical bullshit excuses that can't be proven or disproven.

Bort - 2015-09-26

They like the moral authority and the sense that there is a hard-and-fast right and wrong in the world. In my more forgiving moods, I think this leads them to territory where the harm they bring to the world is completely accidental. The rest of the time, I think the harm is itself the allure -- or rather the control is, and they are just aware enough of the harm to not look too hard at it. They're not cackling like supervillains over the negative impact they have on women, they just know not to think very hard about that part.

Hooker - 2015-09-26

Oh, this is the girl that claims it's inappropriate for men to talk to women.

Hooker - 2015-09-26

Isn't this the one where she was hit on in an elevator and then took to social media to lambaste all men about how inappropriate that apparently is?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-09-27

http://wehuntedthemammoth.com/2011/07/06/two-atheists-get-in-an-el evator/

>>So I walk to the elevator, and a man got on the elevator with me and said, Dont take this the wrong way, but I find you very interesting, and I would like to talk more. Would you like to come to my hotel room for coffee?

>>Um, just a word to wise here, guys, uh, dont do that. You know, I dont really know how else to explain how this makes me incredibly uncomfortable, but Ill just sort of lay it out that I was a single woman, you know, in a foreign country, at 4:00 am, in a hotel elevator, with you, just you, anddont invite me back to your hotel room right after I finish talking about how it creeps me out and makes me uncomfortable when men sexualize me in that manner.

What I'm not reading in this is that anything that "lambastes all men", or that says that men shouldn't talk to women. I don't even feel like she's lambasting the man in question. She doesn't really say or imply that he's a bad guy. She's just talking about how his move made her feel. In a less fucked up world, this could be taken as friendly advice.

As a man, I can sympathize with the guy. I can sort of admire him for taking a risk, but her reaction seems sensible and honest. And I don't know why Richard Dawkins decided to get involved, or why we're still talking about this.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-09-26

They're not selling baby parts. That's the simple truth here, and I think that repeating that truth is the best way to get it out. Educating people on the history of medical research will just be taken as an attempt to put the selling of baby parts in historical perspective.

betabox - 2015-09-26

It pisses me off that more and more of the anti-abortion types are beling allowed to get away with calling embryos "Babies" or "Children" without being shut down.

Old_Zircon - 2015-09-26

Ehh, it's a morally grey area and neither side handles it well.

The real issue, which gets ignored in favor o moral grandstanding, is that history has shown in no uncertain terms that the social harm of denying access to abortion far outweighs the philosophical debate about the point of individuation.

Appeals to science are irrelevant and accomplish nothing.
