It's quite parodic of those Wendy's hip hop style training videos. Also this isn't just a joke on that. I don't mean to spoil too much, but this is from an episode called "Joking Victim", so there might be some foreshadowing in this video.

I used to have to show the same 90s training video for Landmark Theatres, which was full of d-list celebrities and special effects telling you how you should do this and not that, and implying if you keep up the good work that EVEN YOU can go from usher at a movie theatre to movie star! Most people were pretty apathetic but there were a few employees who were as excited as Steven is here, like it was possible.

I always liked those videos more than the Red Cross ones that I have to watch every couple of years. But when I saw this one I thought it was actually Sir Mix-A-Lot, not Sinbad. That's a good impression, Mr. bad.

Oh Homer, quit pretending you wouldn't have given this five stars immediately if the exact same sketch had been done on My Little Pony. Quit pretending you wouldn't have registered 600 fake accounts just to give this video more stars. Quit pretending you aren't the guy from the Wendy's video and you're just mad that people haven't forgotten.

Oh, so now RebbiSu is stealing material from Wendy's? Brilliant.

And Xenocide, I'd like to think that if MLP did this, they'd have the basic decency to include a joke or two; even if it's just visual humor, like a few frames of derp-eyes on the rapper. This? This isn't even funny. This is Family Guy style reference-dropping. (remember VCRs? Remember rapping? I bet you do!)

Maybe there is some foreshadowing, or some kind of meta-joke that I can't appreciate, because it's only funny in context and I need to see the rest of the episode to understand. All I know, Cena, is that this segment, on it's own, is about as lame as the WCW's Shockmaster, and only one-tenth as funny.

I found it quite funny on its own especially how the song just drones on and on with Mr. Smiley rapping about sales tax. And you say there isn't visual humor, well what about Mr. Smiley's reaction to the doughnut, or Sadie's face as the video goes on. Also the whole VHS thing isn't just about mocking old technology. Learning what a VHS is turns out to be very important for Steven later on. That's just how incredibly well thought out this show is.

How is that *funny*? Sales tax is a real thing! It applies to all purchases of edible goods, so OF COURSE any good training video would mention it! Humor relies on the subversion of expectations; merely repeating what is expected from a training video is NOT funny.

"Bloaty's Pizza Hog" works because Jhonen Vasquez actually takes the time to draw hilarious expressions, pick out funny color schemes, and compose quirky music scores. It's like the difference between Calvin& Hobbes (Bloaty's) and Garfield (Stevechu); all that extra effort and attention to detail really pays off.

... which is a far better parody of both old school hiphop AND VHS technology (right down to the subtle scanlines and VHS-style sound mixing), not to mention it being a legitly phresh rap. I am particularly fond of the way Pinkie's flow successfully emulates a turntable scratch at 0:30. THAT is something made with lots of thought, effort, and heart!

OK. So after watching this clip a few times, and mulling it over for about ten or twenty minutes, I guess I can identify one bit of humor. ONE. Namely, the "joke" in this clip seems to be: Stevenchu actually enjoys watching the training video. This subverts expectations, because as we ALL know, "training videos are lame". Steven should have hated watching that training video, but he did not, sooooo... haha?


God, this show sucks. Should'a stuck to stealing ideas straight from anime.

There wasn't even humor in Pinkie's rap. It was just a bunch of facts about Wonderbolts. It was just mindless facts and names for a made up history that has no real bearing on the show. The Invader Zim commercial was just mindless shock value. You're trying real hard to hate this show. Just believe in Steven.

Pinkie's rap wasn't meant to be humorous, and yet it was still funnier than Stevechu's. And Invader Zim has a lot of shock value, but so what? Edginess is fine, so long as you've got heart and sincerity to temper it with.

I believe in Steven; I believe he's crap, and will continue to be crap. But keep the clips coming - I would like to see THE BEST scenes from SteveChu, the best you can find. Prove me wrong.
