Is this the first 'rich old loon bequeaths fortune to pet and hilarity ensues' movie, or is there an earlier example of this?

This seems like something Karl Pilkington would watch and then tell Ricky Gervais about.

"Um, so there was this American cricket team, right? And word comes down that the team's been sold, and the players are all asking 'who to', but the manager won't tell them. All they know is that the new owner's giving them all bonuses, so they're all, 'all right'. So they keep playing but nobody knows who the owner is, until the big game and they look in the stands in the owner's section ... turns out the new owner is a monkey."

Yes! And then Gervais would give that puzzled look and respond with something like "Yeah great story, never saw it nor do I want to see it, ever."

I think this scene would be a great run through for an acting class.

Just so we're clear, Karl would think he was watching a documentary, right?
