I knew it! Plants can talk, they've just been snubbing us all this time.

Irrelevant LJ: I'm kind of proud of a thing I built I'm calling a Jersey Devil. It's a gizmo whose LEDs gradually light up as it gets dark; since I'm using two fire orange LEDs next to each other, it looks like evil eyes in the night (something like the Jersey Devil of legend). I've mounted it in a cardboard tube so it looks a little like a totem pole.

(A transistor controls the LEDs. To flip the transistor off/on, I made a voltage divider with a 100k resistor and a photoresistor. When there's a lot of light the voltage across the photoresistor is just about zero, but when there's not much light the voltage increases and that nudges the voltage on the transistor base so that it conducts.)

Not nearly as cool as what these kids are doing, though.

so, ehh, how is this not a snuff video?

seems like they're using their bodies as a conductor to ground.

Thanks to the wonders of the skin effect, and a good deal of insulating glove and shoe. But yeah, I'd be far away from that blowtorch when it was hot like that. RF burns take forever to heal.

Boyish foolishness aside: an electric arc makes a pretty good demodulator/speaker, no?

In Russia, radio kills video star!

Is the goddamn radiowaves being transmitted through the plant, and becoming audible through the process? Fucking amazing nature, that's just the shit right there.
sasazuka - 2015-10-18
It's this phenomenon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_speaker

Plasma can be used to create soundwaves, apparently. I mean, that's what I understood from the first paragraph, I'm not going to attempt this myself.

Well, that tower seems perfectly safe to stand near.

Plants having to put up with bad music for decades.

In the U.S., this would be surrounded by a 10 foot fence and barbed wire. It appears that, in Russia, a little picket fence is enough.

I swear this has been here before.

I wanna see them touch it with their hands.
