his report was interesting, and so has been the reaction. It's been entirely a shit show of people not understanding the difference between, "we learned something about food" and "NEVER EAT THIS AGAIN."

For some reason people think because there is strong evidence processed meat is carcinogenic that suddenly it's all under attack and to be banned.

I'm still going to eat meat, I just feel a bit more vindicated in avoiding processed foods in general.

Old_Zircon - 2015-10-27

ACTUALLY IT'S ABOUT ETHICS IN MEAT JOURNALISM.

Bobonne - 2015-10-27

Also, people not understanding that 'affects something by 18%' can mean 'could, for instance, turn something from 1% to 1.18%' rather than 'could, for instance, turn something from 1% to 19%'.

Math is hard.

Gmork - 2015-11-01

Video games taught me ratios.

infinite zest - 2015-10-27

Sorry to rain on everybody's ham week; here's a little more in-depth analysis but it's not worth submitting

https://youtu.be/QCld4E11PEM

I'll be outside smoking a cigarette and eating tofu if anybody needs me.

memedumpster - 2015-10-27

Gonna' eat it anyway.

Spaceman Africa - 2015-10-27

I'm going to eat it so I can die.

ashtar. - 2015-10-27

That's the poe spirit!

garcet71283 - 2015-10-27

honestly, I think cell phones, Teflon, corn syrup and power lines are going to get me long before meat.

SolRo - 2015-10-27

So is processed poultry less bad or equally bad?

Have turkey sandwiches been a healthy cancer Trojan horse all these years?

Also, is it the salt or large amounts of nitrates? Or what's the difference between processed ham and a heavily salted pork chop?

Ersatz - 2015-10-27

Hey Science: maybe if you weren't such a downer, more people would listen to you.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-10-27

5 big ones for football causing brain damage and red meat causing ass cancer!

Nominal - 2015-10-27

For years I've been primarily eating tofu and peas for protein for no other reason than being broke :(

infinite zest - 2015-10-27

Replace Tofu and Peas with Rice and Beans and you've got my breakfast, lunch and dinner for the past year, with the exception of special occasions like birthday parties and such. My saddest moment was walking up to the cashier's desk with ten cans of .89 cent beans and a 12 pack of Rainier the other night, which would last me for the week (not the beer, that's already gone.) Anyway go to a bar and take some hot sauce off a table. They won't care and if they do say that you were drunk or something, that you thought it was your drink, and try the next bar, etc..

infinite zest - 2015-10-27

Or drink beer and five star your own submission and watch the sun slowly set..

SolRo - 2015-10-27

I'm not one to talk, but maybe you should cut back on the beer and get some variety in your diet with the money.

baleen - 2015-10-27

Tofu is not cheap.
If you go to a place that sells cheap tofu, then you can probably find cheap meat there too (i.e. an Asian market in non-whitey town).

baleen - 2015-10-27

And jesus IZ get on some fucking food stamps. You live in Portland, right? 30% of people are on EBT there. What's the problem?

infinite zest - 2015-10-28

I make too much to qualify for EBT, and my rent's only 200/mo +utilities, I'm just saving up so I can comfortably get the fuck out of dodge for an unknown period of time. Hence my diet. :)

Cena_mark - 2015-10-28

I make rice and beans often as well. IZ, use dry beans. You'll save money and they taste better. ISoak them cook them and put some in the freezer for when you need more.
I use a central American style gaio pinto recipe. It goes great with eggs, fish, chicken etc.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-28

That's gallo pinto. Look up some recipes online, you'll just need rice, beans, onion, and various spices. It really makes your rice and beans rock.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-28

I qualify for EBT, but it's too much of a pain in the ass to bother with. You're better off without it, IZ.

Rice is great, but I never bother with beans! When I'm feeling broke/cheap, I mostly do things like pasta, ramen stirfry, and kedgeree. When I can find /lbs chicken, I'll make big pots of curry (esp. korma) and subsist off that awhile, too - the spices are costly upfront, but they last for ages, and I've been using the same .00 pack of garam masala for the last year or so.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-28

I dunno, that gallo sounds pretty gaio to me. Shouldn't you be eating some kind of Alaskan food, Cena? Like whale blubber, or ice-cooked caribou?

Cena_mark - 2015-10-28

You know Im back south now. I did eat a lot Halibut when I was in Alaska, because I caught a 92 lb one.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-28

It doesn't matter where you're living now; Alaska is in your blood, you should respect your heritage.

In all honesty, gallo pinto isn't THAT bad, it's basically just kedgeree with gross beans instead of delicious hardboiled eggs! On the rare occasions that I have beans in the house, gallo pinto is usually how I dispose of them.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-10-28

Well if IZ can get off his drunken pins and balls and get down to the local Med Fryers grocery, they got a 4USD/lb special on wild caught Alaskan sockeye salmon. Yes, you read that right bitches, FOUR BUCKS A POUND#### Stick that whole fish in your freezer and saw off steaks as needed. I use a little bone saw for that last bit, but you can be creative. Use the broth from the remains to make risottos.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-28

Sockeye, ptoo. Its silver, king, or nothing for me. I used to pull them out of the water for free. Pink and sockeye are for cans.
You're right Homer. Alaska will always be with me. It was my first unit. I did so much growing up there.
What's your beef with beans? They're awesome.

infinite zest - 2015-10-28

Aw shit! I was just over by the freddys.. I don't trust fish much though. Who knows how much mercury is in them?

EvilHomer - 2015-10-29

My only beef with beans is chili, and then only sometimes. Usually when I have beef I pair it with mushrooms and onions, whether it's burgers, Shepherd's Pie, beefaroni, or stroganoff. Beef is fairly expensive - usually twice the cost of chicken - so when I get it, I make sure not to waste any by cooking it alongside gross beans.

cognitivedissonance - 2015-10-27

HAM WEEK

StanleyPain - 2015-10-27

This wasn't the result of a medical study. It was WHO putting processed meats on their list of Class 1 carcinogens, which is a controversial move in the real medical science community.

There is more to the story than the bullshit headlines that "WHO linked cancer to meat" or whatever. This is probably one of the worst media-misinterpreting-science things I think we have seen in a long time.

SolRo - 2015-10-27

My understanding is that it is the result of hundreds of studies, and the WHO just looked through them all and made this decision.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-28

Really this should be no surprise.
