My father worked as a correctional officer in a prison for over 20 years, and he said the thing they emphasize the most in firearms training is that in an emotionally charged situation, the likelihood of hitting your target, even with extensive firearms training, is very low. For people with no professional firearms training, it's practically zero. People with guns and no training are far more statistically likely to hit an innocent bystander than the 'bad guy'. (and no, deer hunting does not count as firearms training).

This is why I don't get too stressed out about the roughly biannual drive-bys on the house across the street (other than it being really shitty for the upstairs neighbors who AREN'T in a gang and are just trying to raise their kids, of course, I just mean on an individual safety level). The odds of anyone getting hit are really low. Last one I don't think they even managed to hit a building, and the security camera; the deli down the street caught them shooting straight up in the air out of a moving pickup.
