That guy does not explain it in his video. Also apparently he was using the demonstraction to sell some wacky pet theory of his.

Youre right. Laithwaite got kind of crazy when he went into his gyro phase. However his videos on magnetism are pretty amazing.

It's also really not that magical if you think about it. You are putting an enormous amount of energy into that flywheel - thus creating a lot of torque and a lot of inertia. Imagine if that wheel was spinning freely and was released up an incline, it would go for a great distance. It probably has enough energy in the flywheel to be able to launch it into the air several hundred feet. Whatever an object is doing, that's what it wants to do. If it has a lot of inertia, even more will it do what it wants to do. There's nothing really that complicated about gyros - but it is pretty nifty to watch.

Is that how Thor's hammer works?

Sanest Man Alive - 2016-01-05

No, but it is how Wolverine's skeleton works. The old Fastball Special requires cranking his cervical vertebrae up to ~3000 rpm, but that takes a while to set up so they just do it all off-panel while Storm shoots lightning bolts or something.
