Airsoft is generally lower energy than paintball. Paintball is 2-10 J, Airsoft is limited to 4 J at most. However, depending on the rules of the particular game, Airsoft events can include full auto guns.

Anyhow we used to shoot airsoft guns indoors at my last apartment (granted not high powered like this) and they aren't that big a deal. They're very light, you can shoot the low powered pistols at a window from 15 feet away and it will bounce off like nothing. This probably stung pretty bad and left a bruise and was a shitty thing to do but not so shitty that the whole situation isn't hilarious to watch.

As far as risk of lasting damage, I would say this is in the same ballpark as, but lesser than, a particularly severe indian burn or purple nurple, and not nearly as serious as an atomic wedgie, which can result in permanent testicular damage or even death:

EH, there are also conflicting reports that the patch was, in fact, his, and that he burned it after leaving or being kicked off the team the shooter was on.

I still don't get how this gameplay works though. Assuming most people use single shots, and the worst pain would be something like a bad indian burn, what's to stop a game of, say, CTF from going on forever? Laser tag just turns off your gun and you're out for the round and you've got a paint splat on you so people know you're out, but if you're in some sort of armor, and can withstand the pain, via adrenaline, which most kids can; I have enough atomic wedgies, indian burns and split open foreheads to last a lifetime but give me one now and I'd stop playing.

I dunno, at least laser tag and paintball show the consequences, whereas this and video games just train our future soldiers to believe that if you get shot ten times and then go duck around something for a minute you'll be fine again..

If you get hit you're supposed to leave play I guess, but it's honor system so probably nobody does.
