truly a hero for the ages

SolRo - 2016-02-04

5 for evil, -4 for idiots thinking this robber baron asshole not answering to a room full of bought shills is somehow a good thing.

Anaxagoras - 2016-02-04

You don't think showing those assclowns contempt is a good thing? Why not? It's not like they were interested in actual answers or information. They were just going to grand-stand and ask stupid rhetorical questions.

"Mr. Shkreli..... are you aware that the high prices might cause some people suffering?"

"Mr. Shkreli.... do you see any problems with your recent actions?"

etc.

It's obvious both what Shkreli did & why he did it. It was completely legal. It *shouldn't* be completely legal, but it was. You know who has the power to make that kind of price gouging illegal? Congress. But that would require cutting into corporate profits, so instead they would prefer to have their little show trial and rake the asshole over the coals. Not for raising the prices, mind you, but because his antics highlighted the suffering that Congress' inaction causes.

And Shkreli refused to play their game. Oh, he did it for all the wrong reasons, but that doesn't really matter. The jackass legislators were disrespected, and hopefully his antics will force Congress to finally fucking *do* something about the pharmaceutical industry.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-04

he is part of a courageous new frontier of IRL orc level trolls, along with trump

Accidie - 2016-02-04

SolRo dun got trolld

Bort - 2016-02-05

Anaxagoras - one detail that is worth bearing in mind: blaming "Congress" as a whole means punishing the innocent while diverting blame from the guilty. There are plenty of good, dedicated public servants in Congress; the problem is that they're opposed by a slightly greater number of selfish assholes who are philosophically opposed to government doing anything worthwhile.

Which wolf wins? The one we feed.

M-DEEM - 2016-02-05

and I wish merton would play ball because you know these congress folk had some fantastic cop-style zingers at the ready. "Mr. Shkreli did you wake up on the STUPID side of the bed the morning you raised those drug prices?"

"Mr. Shkreli the AMERICAN PUBLIC ain't nothing to fuck wit'"

Im not good at cop zingers

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-05

I was with SolRo 100% until the part where Cummings gives him the line "YOU could change the system."

No, Mr. Cummings, it's actually YOU and your fellow congresspeople that could change the system.

If Shkreli was born into his position I'd give him some leeway, but the will to power pretty much cancels out any chance that this is some kind of weird, misguided attempt at making a statement about the system he's a part of. This is pretty much the same as seeing someone plead the 5th at any of the Senate mafia hearings over the years, except that the drug industry undoubtedly has more senators in their pockets than the mafia ever did, so there's even more hypocrisy on display.

That guy - 2016-02-05

for Anax's breakdown of the situation

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-06

Agreed, glad I forgot the stars earlier.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-02-04

It is really hard to stand out as a sociopath in Washington. I have to give him props for that.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-04

am i really the only one here who has respect for this guy?

Bobonne - 2016-02-04

The only "one"?

How do the rest of the orcs feel about it?

kingarthur - 2016-02-04

Oh god, are the orcs a legion now?

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-05

Can we stop making this about me and talk about how awesome and sexy Shrkeli is

infinite zest - 2016-02-05

Sorry, I have nothing but pure hatred for this man. And I get it, he's mastered the Trap Game and a million other terms he picked up listening to hip hop, applying it to big pharma. But let's flip that script for a second, shall we? Imagine you've got a friend addicted to heroin, because I've got plenty. Take the going rate of heroin (about 200/gram) and have one dealer raise it by the same amount (to about 10,000/gram) as Shkreli did. What do you think's going to happen to that dealer, even if they try to pull that shit? Because a hardcore heroin addict WILL die just like Shkreli's buyers eventually will, just over a shorter period of time, give it a few days. I don't hate the game I just hate the player here.

infinite zest - 2016-02-05

(but of course a big 5 for evilishness).

Bobonne - 2016-02-05

I was genuinely curious about the orcensus, really.

As for Shkreli, he's a boring little man, his desperation for attention only enhancing his general lack of sexiness. He's trying way too hard to parlay being a genuine scumbag into being a 'bad boy', but he's just a white collar lump of humanity.

The vast majority of America's congress is also barely human scum, but that doesn't make him, in opposing them, a better person.

The enemy of your enemy is not always your friend. Sometimes they're just some asshole who also dislikes someone you dislike.

M-DEEM - 2016-02-05

I dunno IZ you might just see massive rekindled interest in good ol' fashioned opium

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-05

"Because a hardcore heroin addict WILL die"

Actually that's not true, unless they have preexisting heart disease that gets exacerbated or are unlucky enough to have a seizure and injure themselves fatally, opiate withdrawal itself is not life threatening.

Source: decades of medical science and about a dozen friends who've quit cold turkey over the years.

Here's a decent little non-technical summary aimed at people seeking treatment: http://tinyurl.com/httclho

I get where you're going with the analogy but I've lost enough people to overdoses (and one drug-related murder) that I kind of take the opiate thing too seriously to let misinformaton like that slide, especially when it's making them out to be MORE dangerous than they are. It's the stigma and illegality that kills people. Make opiates pure, legal and affordable and you're not going to be seeing all the accidental deaths related to unknown purity, health problems from ingesting impurities and chronic cycles of withdrawal, financial destitution and killings related to the criminal opiate industry. Just look at doctors- they, as a group, have an insanely high rate of opiate abuse compared to the general population and yet social and health complications are comparatively rare because opiate abuse in the medical industry is about the closest thing we have to legal use.

Alcohol withdrawal, on the other hand, can easily kill a heavily addicted drinker.

But yeah, as things stand now Shkreli isn't a folk hero, he's a shitbag.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2016-02-05

I had a seizure last month because I was a few minutes late to my morning drink. Earlier in the week, I'd scheduled a doctor's appointment for that very day so I could get the necessary meds to help me wean off it, and I literally had my last bottle of wine in my hand. It was just to tide me over for a couple hours until my appointment. Didn't matter. I fell over with the corkscrew in my hand and landed on my shoulder. Now I've got a deep purple scar on my wrist.

So there's that.

infinite zest - 2016-02-05

OZ yea I was exaggerating a bit; I did have a friend who died going through withdrawl, just had a massive heart attack at age 23. But I've got some other friends who are on it and off it easier than one can simply quit drinking. Buuut I figured alcohol wouldn't really get my point across.

infinite zest - 2016-02-05

SDC glad you're doing something about it: back in college I'd wake up and drink half a fifth of vodka before class, whiskey as I walked to my next class, then beers at work, write my papers, sleep for an hour.. get another bottle of vodka the next day. It hit me when I was in an hour lecture with maybe 30 people in the class, that it had been about 45 minutes since my last drink and I started to freak out and had to leave. The doctor said I had a panic attack (thanks free college healthcare) but I knew what it was.

After that I cut down, a lot. I still drink, but I mostly stick to light beer like Hamms or Rainier. It's easier on the checkbook and it's a much more mellow drunk. I'd see a doctor too but the only "cure" I've heard of (besides checking into a clinic or something) is some medication that basically makes you vomit when you consume much of any alcohol, which sounds a lot worse than just cutting back to me.

infinite zest - 2016-02-05

OZ and I totally agree that it is stigma: I've done it once. Didn't like it. Knew some friends who shot dirty heroin with dirty needles, and others who overdosed. And I'm glad that there are so many needle exchange programs so that the former doesn't happen, but nothing's going to stop the bad heroin until, like you say, it's pure and regulated.

But I understand why you'd take what I wrote personally, too. I was just in a bad mood last night (technically this morning) because for whatever reason people seem to be defending Shkreli all of a sudden.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-05

heroin analogy does not work because of the actual flow of dope into the country does not make it a rare flower

IRL heroin addict here, opiate withdrawals cannot kill you i guarantee the 23 year old had a heart condition or possibly was just a massive pussy to the point where his own anxiety about his life situation threw him into shock or something. booze withdrawals i have seen take many but heroin addiction is really the whiniest of the addictions with symptoms that are exaberated tenfold.

plus if i dont have heroin i can take kratom, loperamide etc

shkreli is a beast in the paint

infinite zest - 2016-02-05

Yeah, heavy smoker too. Like I said I was relatively pissed off when I wrote that last night. If I had thought it through more I would've said "get really sick," which is normally what I see, and what Shkreli's doing anyway. But I was a little drunk and stuff. Like, I don't care if anyone likes or stands up for him. That's your opinion and not mine, and I won't deny that he's a very intelligent person, so I don't wanna argue, but I do really hate him personally.

infinite zest - 2016-02-05

But for the record he was my friend and definitely not a pussy, probably the best skateboarder I'll ever know too, just made some really bad life decisions along the way.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-05

sorry jesty i was a little drunk too im sorry your friend was not a pussy and i have a lot of respect for skaters.

Anna, if you find me tedious and grating im doing my job

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-02-06

He's an Albanian trash wigger who is not even hot. I mean Christian Bale is hot but not in American Psycho. Martin Skreli, whose name is so stupid I can't even bother to spell it correctly, is essentially a boring version of his character without the ax or awesome soundtrack.

memedumpster - 2016-02-07

So, do we get to see a picture of IZ's recliner now? I always figured it was a plaid kind of loose knit style upholstery with notches in the wooden handle.

decoy - 2016-02-05

Quien es mas malvado, Martin Shkreli o Trey Gowdy?

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-02-05

Shikreli, aunque por poco.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-02-05

Congress is dysfunctional and Shikreli's a scumbucket, but Congress does, at least in theory, represent one of the only chances that we'll have to force this guy to give an account of and/or explanation for his actions in public. The fact that he ducked out of it -- though it is, I suppose, his right -- is not a reason to celebrate.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2016-02-05

You people are like the Marianas trench of moral high-ground.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-02-05

You're incorrect to compare sharing and discussing videos on a website with exploiting sick people for personal profit.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-05

lots of idiots finding meaning in their outrage these days

Anaxagoras - 2016-02-05

Yup. And lots of other idiots failing to see that some outrage is warranted and not worthy of mockery.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Stay tediously unoriginal, orcs.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-05

wha i thought we were on the same page with shkrellz

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-05

so you're celebrating trolling but finger wagging me for throwing peanuts at everyone, if you find my tedious im doing my job, but at least i am consistent

Jet Bin Fever - 2016-02-06

Anyone who supports this smirking asshole in any way shape or form deserves a good swift kick in the pants.

memedumpster - 2016-02-07

The Gallows Builders Union Local #86 would like to have a word with you about your harsh anti scaffolding stance.

Jet Bin Fever - 2016-02-08

I... stand corrected.
