What's this in response to again?

Scrimmjob - 2016-02-12

eh, I think it's about John Cleese not playing universities, or it could just be a contest to see who can sound like the crabbiest asshole, who can be sure anymore?

SolRo - 2016-02-12

Some PoEsters have recently transitioned from being adults to being old, and now find the stupid shit kids do on college campuses (just as they did when they were stupid kids, but slightly different) to be the most infuriating and important issue in their midlife crisis.

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

I already knew that people who like to laugh are racist, bigoted shitlords, but this week I learned they're also OLD! Move over grandpa!

SolRo - 2016-02-12

Stop being so sensitive Mrs Nancylimpwrist

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

Oh, is that a tear, SolRo? Is daddy's little girl upset?

SolRo - 2016-02-12

Joke recycling now?

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

Not per se, that's just the line from Beavis & Butthead that comes to mind when I see a grown man behaving like a little bitch.

SolRo - 2016-02-12

Ok, Mr Mancia

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

"Wah wah wah. Everyone's a crybaby but me. Bloo bloo. Everyone who laughs at things I don't laugh at is a mean old racist." - SolRo

SolRo - 2016-02-12

If you weren't so utterly brain dead you might have noticed my critique is about old idiots like you obsessing over what a couple college students think.

But keep nailing yourself to that cross, eventually -someone- will think you're right.

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

Hey, sorry about your feelings dude. Didn't mean to trigger you.

SolRo - 2016-02-12

You sound like a closeted conservative, or maybe just insecure about your masculinity, because your enraged flailing is what conservatives do whenever you insult their shriveled manhood.

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

Sure thing, chum.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2016-02-13

God almighty SolRo sucks

Cena_mark - 2016-02-11

Humor is exactly the thing those anti-PC shitheads don't get. They ironically portray PC folks as easily offended humorless dorks, yet they themselves are the ones who get bent out of shape at the mere thought of political correctness. The very fact that they're the ones making a fuss shows that they're the ones who care too much, while everyone else is minding their business and learning to respect other people's feelings.
You anti-PC dweebs are the crybabies. Shut up and move on you cis-gendered fucks.

Shoebox Joe - 2016-02-12

The ironic thing is that there is a huge swathe of actions that can be connected with the use of the term humorless yet everyone I have seen waving the anti-PC flag has such rigidly high expectations about their experiences that it makes me wonder if the entire census has any firm, directional foothold.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-12

"Humor is exactly the thing those anti-PC shitheads don't get. They ironically portray PC folks as easily offended humorless dorks, yet they themselves are the ones who get bent out of shape at the mere thought of political correctness."

Both sides are comparably humorless.

infinite zest - 2016-02-12

Comedy died with Mitch Hedberg for me.

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

Bill Hicks died for our sins.

infinite zest - 2016-02-12

Yes, Hicks too, but I didn't even know about him until maybe 2002 or so. :(

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

Of course if Bill Hicks were alive today he'd be 54 and therefore, according to SolRo, an unfunny bigot.

Shoebox Joe - 2016-02-12

Hazelnut, please drop it down a smidgen.

Your acting like a real hazelwiener right now

Hazelnut - 2016-02-12

Yeah, fair enough, I was just thinking the same thing. Got too hot under the collar. Especially when there's a perfectly ordinary middle of the road answer, just like for the MRAs-vs-extreme-feminists 'debate': can't they ALL be jerks?

SolRo - 2016-02-12

"Challenging the audience" comes in two flavors;

Pretending you're edgy by reinforcing existing stereotypes and predjudeces that your audience likes and then being a drama queen, yelling "freedom!" when said minority group gets offended and organize some kind of pushback.

And actually being edgy and challenging your audiences predjudeces and preconceptions.

Making a "thieving Mexicans lol" joke to a bunch of white rednecks isn't anti-PC or heroic, it's just lazy.

Making a good "thieving Mexicans lol" joke to a Mexican audience and having them laugh is the actual hard and challenging comedy.

Almost all of the anti-PC crowd fall into the first category

memedumpster - 2016-02-12

You, my friend, have never released wild animals into an audience.

Challenges abound.

misterbuns - 2016-02-12

to be clear:

my one star was for weaponizing carlin and comedy at to justify banal and ordinary hatespeech or just plain douchebaggery.

comedy like is insular thing: it is a writer talking about his experience working against the constraints of a network or the status quo.

to imagine that stuff like this is being invoked by sniveling entitled manbabies on youtube who are upset that they cant treat women like shit or joke about black people eating watermelon is fucking pure garbage.

this is garbage

you are garbage

you are not fucking george carlin. you are not a fucking comedian

reddit this shit isn't for you.

Nominal - 2016-02-12

Did Pillager submit Carlin just to tell watermelon jokes? Shame on that guy!

That guy - 2016-02-12

misterbuns, if you knew that the youtuber who posted the George Carlin routine was a hate-monger, you might have mentioned that earlier. We probably could have had a more interesting conversation about that on that page.

I did not click through to see who posted that routine until a minute ago.

I hope that it'd be obvious (to people on this site who don't wildly jump to conclusions) that I think hate speech is evil, and that I don't associate with people who talk, think or act that way, even when it costs me something; yet I also think that it is constitutionally protected for good reason.

There ought to be social, employment, and on occasion even personal safety consequences for people who engage in hate speech. But defining the precise line between what is and isn't hate speech is no simple task. (I would argue vehemently that nothing related to attacking ideas, values, religion or culture itself can be hate speech. Other people, misguided sick fucks that they are, think that religion is above criticism because it's cultural or something. And yet somehow those same people think that it doesn't apply to Christianity...?)

The asinine end of political correctness sets an extremely low bar for what counts as hate speech in 2016, and then uses that low bar as a weapon, socially and institutionally.

Setting the bar extremely low:
a) pushes the political center away, because the low bar fails the common sense test for more people than not
b) is a distraction from progressive projects and issues such as how the goddamn economy/wealth distribution/corporate welfare/crony capitalism works; not letting the police get away with murder; and not letting the govt spy on us as a matter of routine. It's also a distraction from volunteering at the shelter, or the food drive or whatever. It makes words and metaphysics the focus of progressive politics, which is stupid as fuck.
c) allows people who get paid by the word, and people who get off on social media indignation to do their shit all day and all night.
d) encourages hypersensitivity, which many different kinds of social science studies have shown is detrimental as all fucking hell in so many ways: for the individual who has it, for the exchange of ideas, for tolerance, for heterogeneous societies.
e) is inherently totalitarian in its thinking, and would absolutely become so if given enough power, just as the hard right would become theocratic fascist xenophobic monsters if they got their way.
f) is hypocritical as fuck, as practiced by those who preach it. I'd bet my last dollar that the majority of people who have made a religion out of maximum political correctness have wild double-standards that they practice at their universities. The ideas that either people can't be racist against whites, or that blacks can't be racist are two of the active and well-known examples of this shit.

Setting the bar in the middle, instead of extremely low, wouldgo a long way toward eliminating the above issues.

Setting the bar in the middle leaves room for everyone to be told to fuck themselves in some way- not just straights, whites and males in blue states, and not just everyone else in red states.

YES, OF COURSE these aren't two equal kinds of 'go fuck yourself', in the big picture, but that's exactly what makes the hard left so fucking obnoxious: just because they are not equal kinds of oppression does not mean that the hard left cannot do wrong, or even evil, when given a chance. The biggest possible picture is not the only picture that matters.

Nominal - 2016-02-12

No, That guy. You do not see the bigger, nuanced, complex picture arrived at through pure enlightenment.

this is garbage

you are garbage

absolute pure garbage

reddit, MRAs

fuck her, and fuck him

memedumpster - 2016-02-12

Okay, NOW I believe in SJWs.

Born in the RSR - 2016-02-12

I feel a bit lost here, I just upvoted this cos I like Duckman.

misterbuns - 2016-02-12

:)

me 2

SolRo - 2016-02-12

You couldn't see the stupid tags when you voted, so don't feel bad.

Nominal - 2016-02-12

Someone here perfectly described Duckman as half brilliant rants like this, and half lazy "he likes boobies!" jokes.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-12

As a matter of public record, I am in favor of both.

Xenocide - 2016-02-12

Laughing at status quo-reinforcing stereotypes does not make you a revolutionary, it makes you the opposite.

Telling jokes based on racial theories your grandparents believed in does not make you a free thinker, it makes you the opposite.

Demanding that people have a sense of humor that matches yours, telling people they MUST laugh at something or else, does not make you a protector of freedom, it makes you the opposite.

Sorry most people don't find warmed--over ethnic jokes recycled from the 50's to be the pinnacle of satire anymore. Guess it's up to you and the rest of Larry the Cable Guy's target audience to keep the tradition alive.

Nominal - 2016-02-12

There's a subtle difference between not laughing, and aggressively calling everyone a garbage idiot bigot for telling the slightest biting joke.

And stop it with this SolRo binary extremes stuff. There are shades between hypoallergenic mush and Larry the Cabal Guy.

I refuse to believe that you honestly think the argument this entire time has been to FORCE people to laugh at certain jokes. That's as ridiculous as saying the ACLU is trying to force people to wear swastikas and hate the Jews.

Or am I wrong and that's seriously how you see this?

Xenocide - 2016-02-12

Just think, if you only gave up your SJW ways, you too could be a comedy genius and make the same trigger warning joke five times in every conversation. This is clearly what Carlin died for when he was crucified by the CEO of Tumblr.

Xenocide - 2016-02-12

That was meant as a reply to Hazelnut but it didn't work because free speech is dead. :(

BHWW - 2016-02-12

Wow, talk about your standard strawman

"DURRR ANTI-PC PEOPLE ARE ALL JUST BIG BIGOTED MEANIES WHO WANT TO TELL BIGOTED JOKES WAHHHH"
- super enlightened Xenocide, age 8 and three-quarters

BorrowedSolution - 2016-02-13

Fart

Gmork - 2016-02-13

Look at the mess you've all made!

bawbag - 2016-02-13

'The culture of outrage' aka the perennial whine of the white male majority whenever a marginalised group speaks up and demands to not be treated like shit any more.

Then you get the 'white moderate' who seeks to tell them that they're kinda right on X but not Y or Z and here's how -we- think you should express it if you want to be taken seriously.

*eyeroll infinity*

tesla_weapon - 2016-02-13

I came here for the comedy, and the punch-line was terrible.

Anaxagoras - 2016-02-13

Yes, but "The rabble seems roused" is worth a couple stars.
