Self-insert anime photoshoppers vs. horse owners: you have to choose
Irrelevant comparison - horse owners are, to some degree or another, part of the meatspace real world, while self-insert anime photoshoppers are among the Forbidden Planet-esque 'monsters of the id' that have sprung from the internet and must dead with the real world to make their fantasies real.
What about self-insert Pony photoshoppers?
They are mercifully detached from the messy and expensive reality that is the horse.

The people who made the linked movie had it easier (there are in fact a couple of fan-made Yu-GI-Oh live action series - posting episode 1 of each now without even watching them). Probably easier to film in public where they were without getting in trouble, and while Pokemon is childish, at least it's better known. It's like how it'll be more socially acceptable to play Pokemon Go than Ingress. Instead of explaining, "I'm hacking this portal," and ending up in cuffs, it's "the recent cold snap may have brought Articuno the legendary ice bird Pokemon here!" Damage to your social life and local reputation notwithstanding, eye rolls beat being taken to the police station any time.
I've found and uploaded the first episodes of four live-action fan-series (and one non-first episode by mistake). I admit I may have gone a teensy bit overboard.
oh god!!! i know the guy in the baseball cap!!
ANECDOTES. Please, if that's alright with you.
