Fuck this movie.
Fuck everyone who told me I had to watch it because it's so awesome.
It's built around a stupid premise and it's just straight up torture porn.
Have not seen it but was considering watching the 2008 French version, as I had heard the 2015 American remake is not good.
fuck you for not representing trangressive art
and fuck your little encapsulated sentence mindset
torture porn is the girl in the i spit on your grave remake being pulled around by her front teeth and told to neigh like a horse before being sodomized in a mud puddle
this is a horror movie about a creepy society who tortures virgins in order to bring them to the edge of death so they can cross over then come back and tell them about the afterlife
maybe you watched the american version but the french one is just straight up edgy new wave horror
Binro the Heretic
The premise is flawed.
The victims aren't going to the edge of death and getting a glimpse of the afterlife. They're going insane from mental and physical torture.
It's a secret society torturing an innocent woman for no good God-damned reason because they're fucking idiots. Any information you get from torture is unreliable.
And of course they're just going to do it again because the head asshole offs herself without telling the rest of the assholes what their victim "saw".
It's pointless suffering to make you feel sad angry and sick. It might as well be "Funny Games" or "The Strangers". Just because it's French doesn't make it classy.
the movie is a trangressive hororr about trangressive horror why get offended over something where no one actually got hurt when there is so much actual death floating around everyones social media feeds every day
Binro the Heretic
Because when I was getting upset and wanted to stop watching it, my friends insisted, "No, there's a reason for all this. Just keep watching."
In the end, there was NO fucking reason for it. It's just the usual lazy horror trope of an innocent victim you empathize with having horrible shit done to them so you feel scared and angry for them.
you got your sensibilities shook up, you felt horror and disgust and empathy for the characters, thats kinda the point.. challenging, trangressive, if you were just a little bit more sophisticated you could have accepted the harder stuff as a means to get to the end, which is THOUGHT PROVOKING at the very least, but apparently you would rather just call BULLSHIT because you had your mind made up less than half way through
it's ok, i don't hold it against you, you're just lazy when it comes to creative thinking
"lazy horror tropes" are not what got this movie its critical acclaim and well deserved buzz on the film festival circuit in 2008, but you probably the type to have a super well maintained DVD collection replete with Tarantino, the Big Lebowski and the Six Feet Under box set your parents bought you for Christmas 2009. but by all means keep armchair filmmaking and continuing to expose lazy, formulaic New Wave French Horror
Binro the Heretic
How exactly is this bullshit movie "thought-provoking"? I hear that from everyone who defends it, but they never really explain what thoughts it provokes or even how it provokes thought. It's like when people call a dead shark suspended in a giant tank of formaldehyde "thought provoking".
It's not thought-provoking. You're just trying to come off as somehow intellectually superior, like you can somehow see the streams of binary code that everything is made of. And you feel smug telling everyone else they're inferior to you because they can't see the boat in the Magic Eye poster.
Being thought-provoking is no big accomplishment. I'm sure man thoughts could be provoked by stepping in a pile of dog shit on the sidewalk.
CAN WE TURN THIS OFF
CAN WE JUST TURN THIS OFF GUYS
here's one take that sums up my opinion
The torture in Martyrs was inevitable. You simply cannot refer to it early in the film, suggest that one of your main characters has undergone it and never have any of your key characters endure or suffer to it. The goal of Laugierís script wouldnít be met. We would never know the answer to why had Lucie be put through such torture. The reason for all this hard hitting violence would simply be for sick thrills and chills. We wouldnít know why it was being done and I donít think anyone would be happy in this type of film to have it simply explained to us in a lengthy monologue. It wasnít why we were there.
Because it starts so strong yet impersonal and switches to slow, methodical and deeply, deeply personal it will then turn off many viewers. Any time you can distance yourself from the subject of the film the better off you believe you are. Because Laugierís film made the horror much more personal for me it was inescapable. Certainly anyone familiar with religious history will be more impacted by the answers and the reasons why our characters endure and suffer so much in this film. Hopefully that answer will disgust you as much as it did me.
binro this movie conveys certain truths about cruelty you're still not ready for
a tiger shark suspended in a glass tank of formaldehyde *is* thought provoking, if you can just relax that mental sphincter a little bit and put on that empathy coat and try, just try for thirty seconds, to see something from a perspective that isn't your own.
did you think passolini's Salo was a cheap regurgitation of de sade?
The entire idea is stolen from a Japanese video game which probably got it from somewhere else. It's not novel or even particularly well executed.
The transgressions of this film are boring.
As much as I think Antichrist is hilarious twaddle in its attempts to goad the viewer into please-god-won't-you-feel-something, it's at least coming from LVT's genuinely fucked up worldview and exhibits genuine craft in its stupid goals.
Martyrs is just a regurgitation of a videogame somebody played.
For a vastly superior transgressive French movie, try Les Salauds (Bastards).
That "other thing" presumably being the Roman Catholic Church. Which kind of makes sense given the original movie was French. I actually find the idea for the movie interesting, but watching hours of people getting tortured sounds like a remarkably shitty way to spend an afternoon.

Okay, Bus Ain't Comin', educate me.
What thoughts did "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" provoke in you?

Well that didn't make any sense.
the highlight of this website used to be the comment section, now it's like a support group for people with Intellectually Developmentally Retards
I used to think that when people on here didn't like what I liked. Fortunately, I've grown wise enough to also consider them retards when they agree with me too!
All art is retarded, by the way. You can randomly generate this shit with an algorithm that is just as emotionally riveting and aesthetically pleasing, all while meaning nothing with zero intent by the creator. I enjoyed this clip, but that has nothing to with art, and everything to do with shotgun.
waaahhh wahhh the people in the comments dont accept my blatant unjustified racism
" for people with Intellectually Developmentally Retards "
Come on, that haircut totally deserved it.
It takes her like 20 seconds to reload, so if you're not one of the first two people she gets, you definitely deserved it.
