A lesbian, little blond boy, a lesbian.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2016-02-25

Jews.
Spics.
Niggers.

"That kid actually compared being a girl to being a nigger, a spic, or a jew. LOL!"

infinite zest - 2016-02-25

Seems like Nigger was a pretty controversial word even back then: Blazing Saddles got a lot of heat for using it as a joke, and the All in the Family where it was used wasn't shown in reruns until very recently. Using it casually in a movie might be about the same as casually saying Retard these days, but I'm still surprised it made the trailer here.

People were more shocked that kids were the ones saying it than anything, as the producers intentionally made the vast majority of explicit language in this film lines for the child actors, apparently.

Yeah I remember seeing it some years later: it just came off as the ignorant boy who wasn't afraid to speak his mind, basically the kids' version of Slap Shot. And there was something almost endearing and cute about the word(s), like kid's gonna learn his lesson by the end of the movie. Other examples of this include Driving Miss Daisy (old people racism) and Do The Right Thing (general racism) but it's the trailer itself that really weirds me out, when there's so many other lines in the same movie that imply that girls can't keep up with the boys.

I used to know a guy who was in prison (or maybe jail, I forget) in Boston in the mid 70s. The ratio of black to white prisoners back then was at least as bad as now. One week the movie in the prison theater was Blazing Saddles, which he had seen before he went to prison (jail?), and he was concerned that, as pretty much the only white person in the audience, it might become awkward in general and in particular for him.

But everyone loved it, it may have been controversial outside, but a bunch of black guys in jail (prison?) knew exactly what Mel was going for, obviously.

He told the story way better.

Bobonne - 2016-02-26

To be fair, I'm fairly sure there wasn't really anything 'casual' about it in BNB, just as it wasn't in Blazing Saddles or All in the Family. They were doing it very deliberately, for generally good reasons.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-27

Absolutely.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-25

Stars for this whole fucking movie.

The Mothership - 2016-02-26

Stars for this whole fucking movie.

Bobonne - 2016-02-26

Great movie, even with the sometimes eye-widening 'can't get away with that anymore' at points.

Maggot Brain - 2016-02-26

Geez, trailer, leave something to the imagination.

Rangoon - 2016-02-26

Rated PG.
