By "routinely die" do you mean they live very short life spans at the cafes? Do they not take proper care of them?

Oh, I'm sure there's some bad cat cafes out there, given how many there are. At the good ones it's pretty evident; the cats always have places to go to if they're not up for human interaction and the cats are kept on shifts to keep them from being constantly bothered. They've been exposed to so many people they're pretty much over them - they're not super affectionate, but they're cool with being petted and like to chase the occasional thing. Also it appeared the cats all have their claws so it's not like they've been rendered powerless and there's very clear things saying "don't bother the cats; they will bite and scratch if they're unhappy".

The one I've been to a couple of times was a place where the owner said "I had so many cats I needed an excuse for my wife to keep them, so I opened a cafe".
