I don't know why, but this reminded me of that Clive Barker story about a demon trying to claim some guy's soul only to be thwarted time and again by how mundane and boring the guy was.

I think it's because the climax of the story involved the demon making everything in the house go bat-shit only to have the guy completely ignore it while his family freaked the fuck out. They kept trying to convince him it was paranormal only to have him insist it was the wind or the house settling.

"The Yattering & Jack." I looked it up after posting that. It's a little different than I remembered it.

Also, it was apparently adapted into an episode of "Tales from the Darkside" with Phil Fondacaro as The Yattering.
