I understand he was talented, but I like so little of his music, and there's just SO MUCH of it. Plus he was a notorious asshole. Like the time he broke that 1960-something Epiphone on Fallon that didn't belong to him. Or that time his people sent "Weird" Al a note telling him not to make eye contact with Prince during some awards show.

I really hope that ended with Weird Al saying "hey, how's it goin' man?" and looking him right in the peepers.

There are only 4 or 5 Prince albums that I really like, and one of them is Vanity 6 so it hardly counts.

Controversy is great, and the albums immediately surrounding it are good. I honestly don't think I've ever listened to Purple Rain in one sitting without getting bored and after that it was a quick slide in to the wrong kind of self indulgence.

Plus I think that playing your own music over the soundsystem at your own parties directly redefines what kind of artist you are and isn't just an 'asshole' thing. It's like voting yourself team captain. It's gross.

If he's an asshole, what does that make you as someone not just celebrating his death, but desperate to let a bunch of people know how much you disliked him and how happy you are that he's dead?

All I've heard about his parties is that he recorded almost all of his music since the late 90s live at them. He had a 300 seat theater built on his property and permanently set up for full, studio quality multitrack recording, so instead of going in to a studio and assembling his album a bit at a time on the clock, he would record them live with an audience at invitation-only shows. Which I think is a really good, respectable artistic decision if you can actually pull it off (musically, financially and in terms of actually getting people to pay attention). There are dozens if not hundreds of completed Prince albums that he just never bothered to release, sometimes they leaked out and ended up as bootlegs (the longest one I've seen was either 5 or 6 CDs for a single album) but I've never actually listened to them, just sold them.

I came prepared to laugh at Prince, and I did, but let's give the man some credit here. Grady's rant was so moving, because there is a real truth underlying the flaming rhetoric. Environmental crimes are disproportionately afflicted upon the poor in America, and particularly upon the black and brown Americans. Is the government intentionally poisoning black communities with chemicals that make them stupid and violent? Why, in fact, they have done this very thing in Flint Michigan. The effect of lead on IQ personality and violence is well known and documented, and the city of Flint was poisoned with the full knowledge and at the behest of the local government. There are a lot of stories like this, if you care to look. All that crack cocaine the CIA pumped into the inner cities to fund their foreign adventures is another good example. There you get double the fun: you poison the people you want to get rid of, then you arrest and incarcerate them for taking the bait.

Yeah, I admire Dick Gregory and he's 100% correct about things like lead (manganese is trickier because not having enough is almost as bad as having too much) but he's also had a LONG history of fringe beliefs, all the way back to the 70s when he became a breatharian (seriously, the last couple chapters of his cookbook, which I own, are about how to make your carnivorous pets eat vegan and how we, as humans, don't need food at all and can live entirely on light). I can't say I blame him really, between what the various government agencies were doing to disrupt the civil rights movement at the time and his own experience in prison (not to mention the CIA's involvement with crack, which I'm pretty convinced of myself - they they obviously directed it in to black communities in the 80s just like they used amphetamine and heroin on left-leaning white communities in the late 60s and 70s, its a pretty standard tactic), he had every reason to be skeptical of pretty much everything but it still does more harm than good to having him saying things like the lining of junk food bags is deliberately poisoned to target black communities.

Basically, by blaming conspiracy when in realty it's just shameless disregard for public health and general government corruption in all but plain sight perpetuates the problems by spreading disinformation in the community that's being directly hurt by this kind of stuff.

Hey, if you are ever tasked with communicating some complicated messages to a mass audience, many of whom are functionally illiterate, you'd do well to watch how this cat operates. I'll bet if we asked Dick about your example, he'd say "Well the chips are gonna poison him. So I say what I say, and maybe he puts the bag down. For this I should be punished?" In that sense he is doing more good than harm, and in fact his methods serve a protective function for him as well. Who cares about what Grady the crazy junkyard drunk has to say? There is a zen proverb about a crooked tree surviving the clear cut but the wording escapes me at the moment.

I get what you're saying and don't disagree exactly, I jsut think that in the long run truth is more helpful than expediency, and also from following Gregory at least peripherally since the 90s I'm pretty confident that he's not making a calculated decision about how to communicate a complex idea in a simple way here, I'm pretty sure he truly believes that the US government is engaged in active genocide against black people (which isn't entirely wrong either) and framing it in a way that encourages disengagement from politics, and I think that does more harm than good, because if the victims of this stuff stay disengaged then their victimizers will keep winning.

I've had a couple bootlegs of the Black Album pass through my hands over the years and I remember it being OK. Not as good as its reputation but much better than the stuff he was actually releasing at the time.

You mean all his official releases, or ALL his stuff? Because if someone put up all of the things he finished and then for one reason or another never published that would have been pretty impressive.
