I used to hang out at a bar till every night with a bunch of retired cops and some other roughnecks, gangster types too. I've talked about it a little here and there. I went to thanksgivings and christmas dinners with these guys. I got really close.

I cannot tell you how many times I heard the word nigger dropped like it was nothing. A fucking DETECTIVE said that he had a friend who worked with a lazy nigger and that he could get me a job. There is an ingrained blue shield of white supremacy in the police forces. It's true that patrolling the ghetto is a horrible, thankless job, but, like with immigration, it attracts a lot of fucked up Charles Bronson types with serious race issues and a bone to pick.

It's also true that a lot of white people get shot by cops, though proportionately far fewer. In 2016, police killed nearly 1,000 people. 3 in 5 of those people were described as "hispanic or black."
But that's just the numbers on paper, what is actually happening now is that there is an audience for this abuse.

White people like to pretend it doesn't exist, and that black people just complain all the time. Dairyqueen, try to suspend this thoughtless impulse for 5 minutes and actually listen.

I'm not trying to make a wider point here; I honestly don't know much about police hierarchy.

Detective isn't necessarily a rank per se, but a distinction given to police in a bureau. In the power structure they might be slightly below or equal or even slightly above a beat sergeant. They do wield a lot of power. Detectives themselves have ranks, some wield a great deal of supervisory power in high profile cases.

to add on to baleen's point: i went drinking with a childhood friend of one of my friends who works as a beat cop in one of chicago's worst neighborhoods - and, while he was a nice enough guy to me, it was easily one of the most racist conversations i've ever heard in my life.

I honestly don't see how this could have been realistically avoided. Saying it's racism just detracts from the real issue, and once again everyone is screaming that a white cop shot a black guy just because he felt like shooting a black guy because everyone is racist and out to get black people. If it were a poor trailer trash white guy dressed the same under the same circumstances I have no doubt the same thing would have happened, except it wouldn't have made the front page news because the "POLICE ARE ALL EVIL AND RACIST AND OUT TO KILL BLACKS" narrative is the trend right now.

I really wish there were video before the shooting to paint a fuller picture.

The thought I had was, since Philando told the officer he had a gun, the officer could have said "okay, slowly get out of the car with no sudden moves", and then FUCKING NOT SHOT THE GUY WHEN HE COMPLIED. From there the officer could have disarmed the guy and then gave the gun back once they were done.

I am all for cops' right to protect themselves when threatened, but just carrying a gun isn't a threat. There was something else going on here, and if it wasn't skin color, I'd like to know what it was.

Apparently, his family had discussed many times what to do when encountering the police, and had come to the conclusion that complete compliance was the safest road to take.

So he completely complied with everything the officer told him, and was completely honest and up-front about his legally carried concealed carry weapon.

My brother-in-law is a young man of mixed black and latino heritage, born and raised in America. The idea of my sister and he moving to the States at any point in the future terrifies me, despite his being the sweetest, most harmless young man I've ever met. It shouldn't. About this video: the one argument that bothers me in cases like this is, "________ is an open carry state". That argument always misses the point, because the case never hinges on the fact that the victim had a gun, but that the victim was allegedly reaching for it. In this case I strongly suspect that's a lie -- dude with his family in the car isn't about to announce to police that he has a gun, then reach for his gun to start a firefight -- but the point is, it's not about open carry, it's about the inevitable and flimsy claim that he was reaching for it (which is a right that open carry doesn't grant).

If you have the misfortune to get shot to death by the cops, you're going to have assholes working double-time to justify why it must have been your fault.

At least if you get killed by some piece of shit criminal, your killer might actually be arrested and convicted of the crime one day.
