I too have expressed this idea privately. I have been told it is a cynical one. Exy, I was thinking more that it was released in advance of the Sunday debate, to preemtively discredit any potential moral high ground arguments from Trump over Bill Clinton's personal history. The timing's just right, a few days for it to really simmer in the 5 day news cycle but not far enough in advance for the Trump campaign (such as it is) to do damage control.

I would be shocked if this wasn't something the Clinton campaign had been sitting on for weeks or more until it was strategically useful, because that's how the campaign system works.

I suspect the timing of the release of the transcripts (which aren't flattering but also aren't particularly damning or surprising, they're exactly what anyone who has paid any attention to Clinton's actual campaign would expect - neoliberal centrism) is just a happy coincidence.
