Freud said that the fedora was the archetypal androgynous dream symbol because its masculine cultural associations* were combined with its vulvular folds and creases. But that's only because custom vans hadn't been invented yet, because a really quality van is basically a giant steel boner with a vagina inside of it.
*Apparently Freud wasn't aware that the fedora was primarily a women's hat with strong totemistic popularity in the early women's rights movement of the late 19th century, at the time he wrote that. Either that or I'm misattributing something Dali said to him.
