Maybe the issue with the color grading is the pace at which they're churning out these movies necessitating some kind of assembly line in post production?

godot - 2016-11-21

No shortage of people on IMDB credited as "colorist - digital color correction" for 4-5 feature films in a year.

The issue isn't production pace, but favoring a blue-tinted desaturated gritty aesthetic over a comic book inspired vibrant one.

Also, naming "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" as a precedent for the trend of heavily color graded films is a bit misleading. Color grading is _required_ for film processing, and lots of filmed features made aesthetic use of it. What was unique about Pleasantville (1998) and "OBWAT?" (2000) is the were the first features to do it digitally, rather than by color timing in film development.

Callamon - 2016-11-22

They should quit chasing Amy and get back to work.

SolRo - 2016-11-22

Earliest one I can think of is The Matrix

misterbuns - 2016-11-22

Hi I make movies and work heavily in post.

Absolutely this trend started with Oh Brother Where Art Thou.

While color timing was always a thing, OBWAT was the first use of DI ( digital intermediate) which made the process a thing DPs and directors could supervise and direct in real time, changing the CC process from a general look and continuity pass to something much more involved and subject to much more thought.

This was the first time color timing was used to drastically rethink the look of a movie.

The Matrix was not a DI film.

boner - 2016-11-22

I bet Matrix 2 & 3 were - they went back to the first one and changed it to look like them.

boner - 2016-11-22

It's so different it's not even close -

https://youtu.be/gtktg9hbC_g

SolRo - 2016-11-22

Hmm, they inversed the color schemes.

Original had the matrix bright and colorful while the real world was bleak and the redo was with the real world being colorful while the matrix was bleak.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

Brilliant analogy, Bus.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-21

You don't watch Marvel films to gawk at the cinematography, you watch them to be entertained with awesome action, stories, and dialogue. There's plenty of bad movies that look good for idiots who like that sort of thing like Amelie or 2001 a Space Odyssey.

SolRo - 2016-11-21

Homerbola claims another victim

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-21

The virus can remain in the testicles and eyeballs for years...

bawbag - 2016-11-22

'Homerbola'

Hah! That's a 5!

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

Just give The Dark Knight the credit it deserves as a cinematic break through. It is by far one of the most influential films ever made.

bawbag - 2016-11-22

lol no.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

IMDB Top 250: #4
Rotten Tomatoes: 94% from critics and audiences
Box office: Over a billion dollars
Academy Awards: 8 Noms, 2 wins.
101 other awards

EvilHomer - 2016-11-22

Cena's post has logical arguments supported by evidence; SlowRo and brasag post "lol no".

Cena wins!

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

This is also part of the reason why Trump won. I'll bet if Trump were having a rally and someone yelled, "Dude, Where's My Car? is the greatest film ever!" Trump would say, "I agree, Dude, Where's My Car? is an amazing film. One of the best. Incredible film." Whereas, Hillary would start yammering on about how children need to be exposed to more foreign and black and white movies.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

"If elected President, I will see to it that Dude, Where's My Car? get's the accolades and credit it deserves as a cinematic masterpiece. I will force AFI to include it on it's Top 100 list, and I'll make it part of the Library of Congress's National Film Registry. It will also take the Academy Award for best picture from American Beauty."

I can agree with the last point. American Beauty hasn't aged well. In retrospect it shouldn't have won best picture.

EvilHomer - 2016-11-22

And then Hillary would bomb the countries who made those foreign black and white movies.

Only country Trump wants to bomb is Iran, and their film industry sucks.

bawbag - 2016-11-22

ahaha we've really set you off this time mate huh? :^]

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

No, you didn't.

Nominal - 2016-11-22

Are we all still pretending they're not the same person?

EvilHomer - 2016-11-22

Pretty sure SolBag and BawRo are two different people, dude.

EvilHomer - 2016-11-22

Anyways, it's all about the MHGA Mindset. It's about how Donald Trump, and Superhero movies, are going to Make Hollywood Great Again.

Comics have always embraced the Heroic Realism of 20th century Americana: Duty, Obedience, Government, Progressivism, Sacrifice for the collective good, Violence metted out against the enemies of our ideology and our way of life. All attempts to infect American superheros with the cynical, degenerate spirit of entartete kunst - like Watchmen, or dumb hipster comics like Persepolis - have failed. The Prometheans, Marvel and DC, have been freed of the shackles of print. They rise above, elevating our culture, and now that China has developed a taste for Hollywood blockbusters, there is nothing crappy films like Amelie can do to stop them!

SolRo - 2016-11-22

I'm like 5 different people on this site apparently, depending on which raving idiot you ask.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2016-11-22

amelie- aka "fisher price my first foreign film"

Nominal - 2016-11-23

They both have the exact same shtick, pony-obsession, and 90% of their comments are endlessly replying to each other.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2016-11-29

thanks! i can't claim to have come up with it though

StanleyPain - 2016-11-21

How is this a Marvel thing? Lazy, digital cinematography has been the bane of modern film for fucking years now.

Lurchi - 2016-11-22

movies fucking suck now

I want to see LIGHT

gmol - 2016-11-22

I've never got any of these crit videos, they come across as naive. It's very easy to up saturations and contrasts side by side and say "see! look how much better that is", chromatic adaptaiton probably prevents you from ever even noticing when actually watching the moive.

I doubt anyone took a survey as to some optimal value, but I suspect the production engineers have good reasons for doing what they are doing. It could be because they need consistency across formats or that they know they want to minimize complete black because of reproducibility on different devices or codec artifacts.

I'm guessing there are completely reasonable reasons why things are the way they are, and that following the advice of videos like these wouldn't make even a little difference to anyone.

Maggot Brain - 2016-11-22

this seems reasonable. fantastic beasts had "scuff-up" looking black values.

somedongus - 2016-11-22

5 for making videos that 14 year old boys can memorize and quote later to girls to sound smart/get poon.

Callamon - 2016-11-22

Quoting this video will definitely get you the poon.

"Digital cinematography can look amazing" [shot of Pacific Rim]

............

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-22

His whole readjustment experiment around 3:40 really id a good job of demonstrating how you can take something whose color balance looks like it was shot on beta and make it look like an antidepressant commercial from 1999.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-22

Using Jpiter Ascending as a counterpoint. I'm done.

Can we please have a "turd polishing" tag?

boner - 2016-11-22

This guy's entire argument is he thinks the contrast knob should be turned up.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

Boner, he made a good case. What's your plan? Should we use film like the Lumiere brothers did? Wake up man, it's 2016.

Nominal - 2016-11-23

It's uncanny his ability to be objectively wrong about subjective opinions.

poorwill - 2016-11-22

Anyone seen Doctor Strange? I kinda want to.

bawbag - 2016-11-22

Yup, for capeshit it's not at all bad! The humour falls flat IMHO but if you're a Doc Strange fan it's a fairly enjoyable cinematic outing.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

Capeshit? That's a pretty derogatory label for the genre that saved Hollywood.

EvilHomer - 2016-11-22

Not sure what it even means, but sounds kinda racist.

poorwill - 2016-11-22

u sound kinda racist

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2016-11-22

These observations are deep.
And vibrant.

NewHeavenSockman - 2016-11-22

the description of this video made me think of a marvel criticism cinematic universe, so five for that

betamaxed - 2016-11-22

There's a lot of pretentious film nerds who are mad that Marvel is consistently putting out movies that mass audiences enjoy. They think by nitpicking technical details that no average audience member cares about they can earn some sort of film-guy-cred.

Additionally: Jupiter Ascending was a piece of garbage that looked like shit from start to finish.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-22

Stars for shining light on why O Brother Where Art Thou is so ugly, because my god.

I know it's an unpopular opinion but I found it such a massive disappointment after, well, every single movie the Cohen Brothers did before it. It's not a bad movie at all but so much about it is heavy handed in the wrong ways, the period stuff is too cartoony, the concept overshadows everything and seems forced, and while the music is (mostly) great it almost singlehandedly kicked off the "upper class white kids cosplaying as the rural poor" clusterfuck that was/is the "americana" thing, one of the worse pastichey music revivals around, up there with the 80s rockabilliy revival and the 90s swing revival and whatever else Brian Setzer touched.

I'm watching it again right now to make sure I didn't judge it too harshly and so far it's holding up less well than I expected and I don't think I'm going to make it.

Nominal - 2016-11-23

Since around the 00s, it seems like only every other Cohen movie is great. For every Fargo, we get a Burn After Reading, The Lady Killers, or Hail Caesar.

Basically every time they star an A-lister it ends up being a C movie.

Also I really fucking hate George Clooney.

Nominal - 2023-05-10

The future is having to choose between blue tinted grit or oversatured orange/teal.
