I was really expecting the season to end with Darius engaging in some complex plot to stop his arch-enemy, A Dog. The circumference of that tree would be crucial to his calculations.

Oh, here's what Darius has been up to recently:

This show worth checking out? As someone who spent most of his life in Atlanta I feel like I should be watching this.

Bort - 2016-12-24

I feel like it's worth watching. More than a couple black bloggers have said that it's got a true-to-life quality to it that you don't normally see on TV; I've seen it described as a love letter to black America.

The star of the show, Donald Glover, plays a guy (Earn Marks) who went to Princeton for a while, dropped out for reasons as yet unexplained, and is trying to make some sort of life for himself, his sometime girlfriend, and their baby. He becomes the manager for his cousin, an aspiring rap star in his 40s, and Frau Bort and I have debated Earn's choices at length. She says Earn is making one bad decision after another; I say he's tried to do things the "right" way but it never got him anywhere so he's choosing from among whatever options remain.

Cena_mark - 2016-12-24

That sounds right up my alley.

kingarthur - 2016-12-24

Yeah, Bort, your description sold me on it. Going to put it on my to do list.

bac - 2016-12-24

There's always hope for season 2.

bac - 2016-12-24

@bort: I don't see how any of Erns choices can even be categorized as 'wrong'. Sure, it could be argued quitting a shit job to promote a musician is a pipe-dream. I'd say it's more a calculated risk.

Bort - 2016-12-24

I too see it as a calculated risk, based on how nothing else was working. Frau Bort is of the opinion that Earn needs to look harder in the world of conventional employment.

Objectively speaking, I think she's right: Earn definitely has well-to-do contacts who could help him find work, but probably out of pride he doesn't go there. He walked away from Princeton (and is the sort of person who will reference Tiresias out of the blue), it's very likely he feels a need to prove that he made the right choice, and he can do that only by making it on his own. Which is fine except that he has a daughter that he needs to think of.

So it kind of comes down to how important pride is.

Wow this show sounds great! I'm currently getting through everything up to current "Rectify" (IMO the best TV show possibly, like, ever) but then I'm totally checking this out.

For some reason I thought it was a little more.. umm.. BTN/Inspirational? Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I was picturing something completely different based off a trailer I kept seeing during my 3 months in jail earlier this fall.

Bobonne - 2016-12-24

There's a Frau Bort? Congrats, man.

...don't know why I was struck to make that comment, it really isn't sarcasm or anything, just genuinely positive. I still remember your days of posting Paprika Chicken recipes, along with all the other personal stuff from the POE News days, and hearing something positive around here feels rarer than it should be, some days.

Uh, sorry. Getting weird.

Bort - 2016-12-24

Thanks! Not formally married but "Frau" is close enough for most purposes. Frau Bort has been around since Dubya was in office, it just doesn't come up that often.

I think I know where you're coming from, though: we don't know much about what goes on in each other's lives, and the assumption until stated otherwise is Recluse With An Internet Connection In A Filthy Hovel.

bac - 2016-12-24

This show is objectively fucking good. and you all owe it to yourselves to watch the first two episodes so you'll then watch the rest of them.

infinite zest - 2016-12-24

Yeah I torrented the first season and have already watched half of it since I woke up this morning, for the most part leaving my Green Bay Packers on mute.
