I had one of these. It had a ton of potential, but SNK dropped the ball spectacularly by not releasing much software for it in the NA market when the initial sales weren't great. They officially withdrew Western market support for it something like 5 or 6 months after it was released when everyone was hyped for future titles; a few games that actually had US releases became insanely hard to find (I should know) because a lot of retailers were incentivized to send their stock back to SNK. Some games were still localized later on, but again...hard to come by and the internet markets were mostly dominated by the usual idiots marking up the prices 10 fold because "import."

The NGPC really got screwed by SNK's collapse. The system had around five percent of the handheld market and was growing, which sounds pitiful but was really, really good for a system facing the Game Boy at the height of Nintendo's Pokemon craze. But Aruze, the pachinko company that bought SNK, pulled the plug anyway.

A bunch of cool games were left untranslated or unfinished. The second Cardfighters game and the below-mentioned Ganbare Neo Poke-kun never left Japan, and SNK canceled Magician Lord 2, which looked like a modern Castlevania with shapeshifting powers.

Special mention for the SEGA Nomad/PC Engine GT though the Neo Geo pocket was excellent too.

Game Gear was the best color system. Terribly underrated, and it could play Sonic.

Sonic Pocket Adventure (hehe) was the best Sonic game and unlike the GG it didn't lose an allowance worth of batteries in 30 minutes or less.. but i liked my GG too until I let my friend borrow 8t and his dog basically ate it

I had one but i only ever had Metal Slug for it. the game selection really sucked.

Yeah, the library was too small. SNK took a while to realize that not everyone buys a handheld system for fighting games.

Still, the games it had were pretty good, for the most part. The fighters are surprisingly great, especially SNK vs. Capcom and The Last Blade, and Cardfighter's Clash is excellent. One neat import obscurity is Ganbare Neo Poke-kun, where you encourage/torment a little cartoon guy into making Wario Ware-ish mini-games.

I wouldn't say the selection sucked; nearly every game was a 5 star winner. This commercial make a me wanna dust off the old ngpc :)
